Please help me to choose pickups for my SG
« on: July 29, 2009, 12:01:06 PM »
Comrades,

Please help me to choose set of covered humbackers for my Gibson SG Standart. I want to replace my stock 490/498, because want to try something else for comporison with Gibsons, and my friends recommend me Bare Knuckles, but I lose one's way in variety of this PUps. I like the term "Vintage hot". And want to have rich, full, with a bit of sparkle, sound from my set, without "icepicks" and bassy buzz in neck. More velvet and brilliance in neck and thick, meaty, but not too agressive (like rails or simmilar) in bridge. After shielding of my guitar  PDT_038 it sounds very thin and without any meat in sound, with a lot of highs. I want to redo shielding and change pickups. What set you can advise me?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Sorry for my english, I'm from Saint-Petersburg, Russia  :)

"Comrades"....and actually from russia! Fantastic.

Welcome to the board, comrade!

I dont know what pickups you should get. I only really know the metal ones. Though crawlers would do what you want, I dont know if they'd do it the best.

P.S. Your english is better than our russian :)

hello, tovaritch! :)

i've got some small experience with SGs... an SG61 that tuned out simply perfect with a set of Cold Sweats, and an SG like guitar that sounded quite bad with Holy Divers and now found its heaven with Rebel Yells... they're all contemporary pickups but, in my opinion, live on the lower edge of their category... in particular i think you'll love the RYs... but from what i know (no personal experience, though), Black Dogs could fit you needs even better.
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

"Comrades," it's just a joke, but I'm glad to see that you like it

Thak you for your answers and I want to ask you: what you think about Black Dog set or Mule in Neck and Black Dog in bridge?

Rebell Yell Set I have an eye too, but want to take more opinions.

neck mule is awesome, bright, clear and articulate. and it's more or less what you're looking for. (RY neck is similar, just hotter and a bit smoother)
black dog bridge should be meatier and bassier than the mule, so a correct choice - judging from what you said about your tone requirements...

Welcome to this nice place Comrade !

what you think about Black Dog set or Mule in Neck and Black Dog in bridge?

Da !
This combo is going to work in both power AND voicing : it's a good choice !

I think many options are going to satisfy you : Mule, Abraxas, Emerald, crawler are designed with an alnico IV magnet in the neck position which is a pure vintage heaven ! (the ones I prefer !)

those calibrated set are excellent as well as the Black Dog -  Mule combo you are considering.

And Dheim is right I also tried an SG with a RY set : it was one killer tone !

cheers !   :drink:

Hey, I have recently been on the baileys Build your own guitar course and built me an SG style guitar. i made myself some Mississippi Queen humbucker sized P90s to fit in it.

They sound fantastic in SG style guitars! I am able to play anything from blues to ACDC kind of stuff.

Quote( After shielding of my guitar  PDT_038 it sounds very thin and without any meat in sound)

The Mississippi Queens are wound with a 42 gauge wire and though effectively a single coil because of the amount of 42 gauge wire on the bobbin you will get a fat meaty tone if you turn up the gain! With an Alnico 5 magnet in the bridge it will push it harder also helping thicken up that thin tone you seem to be getting.

But the thing i love about having the Mississippi Queens in my SG style guitar is that if i want to play something smooth and bluesy it will easily accomplish that area too!!!

MrPring, I think that it's because you like PRS sound more than SG. Anyway, guitar sound isn't made by only PUps

MrPring, I have a few guitars (tele, asat, SG) with different necks, but each sounds so fantastic and I forgot all that small things about fat necks or somth.

to all, you are so funny guys, and I'm glad to deal with you :)

AndyR, a few lessons and you'll can tell some russian phrases rightly.

The Mule IV and the Black Dog are my favorite set for present.

I think to ask His Majesty Tim for advice about set.

And I have one more technical question. I'm a lefthanded guitarlayer, and I don't know has BKP humbuckers differences for righthanded and lefthanded guitars, or not?

No  :)

That only applies to Strat/Tele pickups with staggered polepieces....
