Alder?
« on: July 31, 2009, 06:42:18 PM »
Hey guys I am thinking of getting a Jackson Sl2H. Which is a maple neckthrough with alder wings and ebony board. I was thinking of possibly a C-Pig in the bridge and a Nailbomb in the neck. Would that be a good combo in a bright guitar? Or would I be better off going with Alnico in the bridge such as a regular Nailbomb or Alnico Pig? The guitar would be tuned to B standard and would be used mainly for melodic death metal. I want the bridge all out brutal and the neck to be smooth and fluid. Thanks.

I think you're right on your Warpig selection. How about a set of warpigs? That's what I would I probably go for.
Whether you should get a A5 or ceramic warpig for the bridge, depends on the amount of tightness wanted. Any sound samples you're aiming for?

Painkillers are apparently the cats pajamas in alder, just listen/read all of Antag's stuff on this board. He is a Jackson fanatic.

Really? My dealer actually has my PK there, but we both figured it would sound like a mess in alder so he was going to swap it out for me.

Okay well I think I'm going to go Warpid set. W/ a C-Pig in the bridge. Now the question is open coil or covered. This is the VERY green soloist they are going in.

PK works nicely in alder/maple neck-thru Jacksons - I have one in my KV2.  I tune to Eb but you're going right down to B, so I don't think you'll have any problems with it being too bright.

Far from being "a mess", I find the PK has the mids you really need to get the best out of a Jackson.  FWIW, clip here

As for Warpigs, I've never tried a CPig, but I'm certain the APig would work well - it sounded pretty damn good in my detuned Gibson (clip here & in Davey's bolt-on Jackson, so between the two I speculate that it would do "all out brutal" in anything

Just to answer the quesiton of what wouldn't work, IMHO the Miracle Man would be my last choice (not enough mids), followed by Cold Sweat.  While I love the Holy Diver in Jacksons, it wouldn't be my first choice for tuning right down.

Nice Jackson BTW :D  if I was putting a BKP in that I'd go for plain black open poled, possibly requesting black allen poles & slugs (if not a WP).  Covers just don't look right in a Jackson to my eye, but if I did go for covers it would be black w/black allen poles.  YMMV etc...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I had no idea that The Joker played Jacksons. I always had him pegged for a jazzer.

defo double purples in there...

i always wanted a green guitar, but never found the right one

have a maple through neck, alder wing jackson with ebony board - painkiller fitted to that and i find it has a bit too much attack. i think thats because i have just a volume control on that guitar - adding a tone control (or simulate it with discretes) would take enough of the edge off it i reckon.
(that might be a good project for this weekend actually)

might consider a miracle man in there, i had one in a maple through neck once and strongly approved of the tone.

Thanks guys. I am set on the Pigs. Probably going to go open coil with black screws. Except no you crazy bar-stewards have me thinking about purple pickups w/ purple knobs. I wonder if Tim would do purple Pigs. That would look nuts.

Could always get your green pickups rewound to Pig specs. If you like the green that is.
