I read an interview with a certain Mr Iommi sometime ago in Guitar where he said he used a slapback echo to get extra girth in his tone, anyone else use this technique?

Any recommended settings?

Any recommended (cheapish) 9v pedals that don't colour the tone too much?

Any other info's welcome, as I tried a DOD Echo ages ago, but hated it, but I recently tried it on a one of the patches on my POD and it worked really well. I remember Tim saying that he's using one on his No.2 rig with a 20ms delay, does this give the desired width? Which pedal?

I (and Tim) use a Choralflange from fulltone, you can set it to give a short delay, this gives a double track effect and sounds like two guitars playing very slightly out of time, just the same as if you double track and record the same part twice in a studio.

Any echo with a very short (no more than 20/30ms) delay with only one repeat will work. Or a chorus pedal with the rate set as low as possible. The Line6 Echo park might be a good one, or the usual boss suspects!

How cheap is cheap?

in terms of really cheap - the Danelectro PB&J Delay has a slap back setting and it doesn't really screw with the tone too much. In fact I got mine for £20 s/h and it is great fun.

ebay seems to have them 2nd hand alot - so look there.

Slap back is what you don't want - needs to be set so you don't hear a clear repeat - just a thickening

It's a widely used technique. Eddie, the Edge, Brian May all use echo to fatten up the tone. A very short delay (20 ms) with one repeat sounds a bit like there are two guitars playing. It's also known as ADT (automatic double tracking) and works great with a stereo setup. Set the interval a little longer (100 - 150 ms) and more in the mix and you'll be in rockabilly heaven.

The Danelectro pedals are good units for the money with plenty of caracter.

I use a Visual Sound Liquid chorus/Echo in the effects loop of my Speed Twin head,set to a single repeat it really does beef up the tone.The effect of echo/delay is always strongest in the effects loop.

Billy Gibbons also did it by accident by recording using a direct recording output and microphone at the same time on Rhythmeen, which by the way is an ace album.

Would that be a good pedal to use for this purpose (Line6 DL4 modeller) or would a Fulltone ChoralFlange be a better buy?

A Fulltone would be a great choice if I had that kind of money! :(

I have actually been looking at a Rocktron Short Delay pedal on eBay which seems to be a good choice according to the Harmony Central reviews (the majority of the reviews saying that it was a good pedal with short delay times). I'll just have to see if Santa can fit one in his sack for me! ;)

I use a boss dd-5 on the effects loop of my amp. I use a short delay setting sort of what hjm described. It provides a nice fattening effect especially for leads.

Nice one. I ordered a Rocktron Short Timer Delay from eBay yesterday (Fri), after doing a bit of research on it, sounds like the kind of thing that'd do for me (i.e. cheap-ish but not nasty cheap). It's got some good reviews at Harmony Central, and not that many slagging's off, which for HC is some going! ;)

The kind of stuff I'm playing uses a lot of single note riff's and I was after some way of making them a bit beefier without relying on the good old power chord (they're in reserve for the really heavy/chuggy bits). Let's hope that this pedal can help beefing the sound out.

FWIW, it looks like I might have a band soon as well! Wahey! I've been jamming with a bassist, on and off for a while now, but using a drum machine for the rhythm. The bass player knows a drummer, and he's interested in taking the material we have and adding another dimension to it all. Fingers crossed! ;)
