Actually, this whole build your own thing sounds remarkably interesting. I just think it is incredibly daunting, to start with a block of wood and say 'Thats going to be a guitar in a few months time'.

Still, its definitely a potential idea. Its reassuring to know that luthiers would help out if in trouble.

I get my wood from a local timber yard (Yandals). there isn't so much alder there though, you gotta be quite luck on that, but I prefere other woods anyway such as poplar, maple/birdseye, sepelle.

yea it defininately is a mission, there are times when you hate it (e.g. router catches and destroys a humbucker rout), and times when you love it (the body has just been cut and routed and is starting to look like a proper guitar).

Actually though Ive been very tempted to get some parts made for me as sometimes I don't have some of the tools or patience to do a really top-notch job and Feline guitars have some very reasonable prices for brilliant craftmanship, i don't know about the other two as I havn't researched their stuff yet.

i partially agree with davey here, i think if the neck and headstock matched the body it would look killer, but atm it looks a little ghastly :? . if u just changed fretboard to ebony and headstock to black or red it would be just fine :)

My source for air dried ash I get off cut boards which would make 3 Dinkys (if you're careful with your cutting) or probably 4 rhoads Vs for £28!! Big lesson of building though, get them to machine plane it for you

I got a really nice pre-slotted and radiused fingerboard from craft supplies for about £18.
If you're daunted by the whole neck/trussrod/headstock thing you can always buy a neck and build your own body. A V wouldn't be that stressful to cut by hand really, and requires no contouring, so the only tools you'd need are a router and a drill press (both of which you'd probably be able to borrow from someone).

If you are gonna do it, at least pick a paintjob that doesn't make your audience throw up and then go home when you use it in a gig :drink:
