Endorsement deals run out all the time.

I think if you really like something, you'd put your name to it till something better comes along, or someone offers you a better deal.
If you can be bought out of using gear it suggests you probably didnt care much about that gear, so that endorsement didn't really mean much.
Would Krank have just said "oh your endorsement deal ran out, but its ok because we don't really need you" or would they have tried to keep him on board?
In any case, I think if artists start changing up what they are using it just weakens how serious their endorsement of that kit actual is.

It's always impressive if someone has used the same gear for a long time. you know they love it. do you know what im getting at?

Definitely. I think that if an artists really loves a certain product (e.g. Yngwie with his Fenders and Petrucci with Mesa), it will boost sales over a long time. Metallica's recently fling with Randall left me apathetic. With Metallica it's obvious they use ESP and other brands solely for monetary reasons, since they use other brands (Gibson, Mesa etc.) in the studio all the time. It's just a way for a band to make more money.
If an artists suddenly changes brand it doesn't change that all his previous work and gigs were done with the old brand.

If you truly love a sound or a company you won't change even if another company offers you $x more.

Really, so the Gibsons, Fernandes, Jacksons they used for Kill 'em all, Ride the lightning, Master of Puppets and possibly Garage days revisited were a figment of my imagination. I believe they started endorsing ESP just before the Justice for all album as Hetfield was looking for consistent sounding guitars as his Gibsons all sounded different to each other. Or for more money, depending on you point of view.

So, hardly year dot, unless you count their first three albums as not worthy of classing as Metallica?

Hardly:

They have been endorsed by ESP for a long time, but look at some live videos and studio footage (if I recall correctly even Kirk uses a Gibson in the free St. Anger DVD).

I'm by no means a 'Tallica fan boy, but their blatant disrespect to ESP has always been somewhat of an eye sore to me. Especially if their great ESP sig models are based off a model produced by another company.

In all fairness,

ESP have an extremely aggressive endorsment policy

They can in fact play whatever the hell they want. Hey, I $%&#ing love my legra customs, but I want to play other guitars as well

And if youre talking about the asthetic stuff on that LP, I believe james does that himself.

Oh, I think that they're narcisistic has-beens.

But the stuff that was said above wasnt fair imo!

Well, no, death magnetic was tollerable, though I like it less with every listen, and *some* of the last show I went to (the DM tour) was good (the parts WITHOUT the $%&#ing dancing laser shite and flying coffins)

Hmmm.  Impossible to check, as it would mean having to watch that horrible godawful DVD again.  Frankly I'd (almost) rather stand in front of a mirror and say "Candyman" five times.  Anyone brave enough?  :?
