Boss OD-1

I doubt its worth the £100+ these go for on the bay, but I must admit I'm quite curious. Not many pedals advertise themselves as an OD-1 clone. Anyone with any experience?

Doing some digging. Theres two version apparently - naturally the first one is rarer, more valuable and sounding better ;)

Is that the right clip gwEm?
Really only showed off his Marshall amp  - couldn't se any discussion of the pedal

I rather liked the solo tone on this clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MCRDlUAhcA

Same again - more gain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B--WF1pPyvY

Pedal apparently based on a OD1 without the buffer (hardwire bypass instead) but quite expensive
Tasty playing too!

Are you researching Jake's gear gwEm?
I think with a few tweaks of the RC booster you could get quite close (would probably feel a bit more hifi)

You got me Will ;)

Feline: it seems like you noticed, but the clip I posted was boosted with an OD-1

HTH seems an OD-1 fan from some forum searches, perhaps he'll join us in a moment :)

I like different pedals on my Marshall, but none really get that hair tone.. GE-7, crunchbox and phil hilbourne treble booster are my favourites on my 2204. GE-7 comes the closest, and my SD-1 before I modded it.

the OD-1 is great at boosting a Marshall, I've modded an SD-1 to OD-1 specs and really should get on the case of offering this up at some point.  I might end up writing up a 'how to' and selling the mod as a kit.

The dude who recorded our EP had an OD1, sounded awesome through a ceriatone 2204 clone and EV12L speakers. We ended up doing both rhythm tracks with it just using different guitars.

for some 80s metal style clips, a coupla our tracks using it are up at www.myspace.com/gaywyre
leads were done through a 5150

Im quite surporsed boss doesnt still make them, they seem to go for quite big money on ebay.

Just compared the SD-1 and OD-1 schematics. The dual op-amp version of the OD-1 is very similar to the SD-1 indeed.

what's the difference between them? isn't the OD1 basically an asymmetric tubescreamer? I might be thinking of something else

both the SD-1 and OD-1 could be described a asymmetric tube screamers. Obviously the OD-1 has no tone control. There are some differences in component values, and the second gain stage is configured as inverting rather than non-inverting.

if you're feeling cheap-arse, you can buy a single resistor and a capacitor and move some components and wires around to perform the conversion.

edit: obviously, while you're in there, you might want to perform other mods

on Friday ran out at lunchtime to buy a new SD-1, on my way home brought the components for the mods to OD-1 specs.

few hours ago I tried the stock SD-1.. i still quite like the SD-1 in standard spec, even if its a bit meh.

so just finished modded it to the later dual opamp OD-1 specs. sounds really really good. colours the sound hugely - very bright. changing the EQs on my 2204 to suit, the most amazing 80s metal tone comes out. cleans up well too.

found some circuit tweaks on the net to make it closer to the original quad op-amp version, which I'll now try. will report back

the brightness is alot more manageable with the capacitor changes to bring it closer to the quad version specs. The pedal is a bit less fun though.

i'm never sure if changing audio path electrolytics is a good mod. anyway, i changed them out... could this be the source of the reduced fun?

First thing that came to mind was Ibanez's "hand wired" tubescreamer that chalks in at $300

errrr...correction; $350  :?

Sounds like I may have to keep my eye out for one of these... bright... 80s... cleans up well... where's the downside?! :)
