It's the fact that X Factor /pop idol or whatever has completely replaced Top Of The Pops or whatever we all used to watch and follow that offends me most because:

that most of the public see the music industry as just the artists on X Factor and ignore all the other musical choices

that Simon Cowell is the winner no matter who wins

that he will chose a song that maybe he has the rights to

that he will engineer it so he gets a playing fee as well - maybe just for banging a tambourine in the background
(for which he stands to earn as much as the singer)

OK - we had rubbish chart-toppers in the past at Xmas - Mr Blobby etc, but for it to be Cowell's lackeys year in and year out is getting tiresome

I don't have enough involvement with the mainstream pop culture for it to piss me off but that itself speaks volumes.

I love this sort of thing.  It's about as British as anything gets.  We'll quite happily spend our hard earnt money just to wind up someone who we've never met.  Look what happened with John Sergent.  Immature and purile but pure class, that's what being British is all about.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Anyone happen to catch this?

The BBC got Rage Against the Machine to play the song live on 5 Live, and it seems like they asked the band not to do the sweary bit at the end, but they go and do it anyway:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8418158.stm

And then the one presenter, having just cut the band off after letting 4 expletives out on air, cuts them off and tells everyone to go buy the X-Factor single instead.  I thought the BBC had impartiality rules against that kind of thing...
