pre-build: P90s with what type of wood?

Hey guys

been enjoying the hell out of my MQs  8)

gonna be building something next year, it'll have BKP90s. my SG with the MQs is mahogany, and i love it, but i think i want to do something a bit different with this build. I have two mahogany guitars already.
it's going to be a Jagstang shape, I'm not sure what scale length or anything yet. I think mahogany would be pretty kickass, but what other kinds of wood work really well with P90s? i want a real nice jazzy kind of neck clean, twangy bridge clean, and a fat overdrive. this guitar will probably be predominantly for clean work, and slightly overdriven blues/reggae whatever, but i've got other machines to do the rockin 

open to all kinds of suggestions!

ps: also open to the idea of making it a baritone guitar...  :twisted:

I love alder, it seems really balanced and the overwound MQs I have in my 72 tele deluxe are everything you describe. Warm and clear in the neck and can get raunchy when the bridge is selected.

On the subject of scale length I have guitars with 24, 24.75, 25 and 25.5 scale lengths and for my money the Gibson scale length is the one to go for. My reason for saying this is to do with note bending. The alacrity of a bend on a shorter scale length is so much more vital and exciting, so much more R&R. Hopefully others will disagree on this as this is what forums are all about.

sweet guys, so here's my mock up at this point in time:



Mahogany or Alder body - undecided. Lime green paintjob
Maple neck, rosewood fretboard, CBS headstock, Grover tuners, 24.75" scale
Tortoise shell pickguard
Bareknuckle P90s (hum-cancelling middle position)
No phase switches. add a 3-way switch where the jack is, move the jack to the bottom (tele style)
No tremolo. String-thru w hardtail bridge

You shall get a Mahogany body...

Not sure the Lime green will be cool with the tortoise, but you shall order and see how it ends... if you get a lime green alike this photoshop will be cool, but "lime green" always come in my mind in a much more "SCREAMING" colour

^Good point man, one of the reasons I plan on painting it myself! I'm already thinking though that I might be headed in a more surf / seafoam green color direction, and then either with a tort guard, or black, or cream.

unless I decide to cut the body myself.. i DO happen to have some black walnut lying around.. anybody know how that would sound?

usually quite middy.  its noticably different to the guitar tones people are generally used to.  some like it some dont

Whatever wood or colour you go for I think Jagstangs look great and your mock up with the P90's particularly so (and I like the funky colour).

I was never really that into the offset bodies when I started out playing, but over the years I've really grown fond of them.

I made a new mockup guys, I think this looks pretty sweet!



If I can't mix up a lime green paint that I like, I'll have to fall back on seafoam or the like. But I'm really excited. :D
