Field Recorders
« on: December 17, 2009, 07:21:33 PM »

Does anybody know a decent but cheap field recorder that works?  I'm off the play a Reggae gig tonight and would like to record it but my Boss Micro BR just distorts with the onboard mic.

So what are my options?

Boss do a mic that plugs into the BR but would that distort also?

Even when you set the gain low the small onboard mics can never handle band levels so after a cheap alternative that can.....

I don't know how cheap you mean. I have a Tascam GT-R1 and that copes with most situations but there are others too that perform well. I record most of the gigs that we do and most of them come out really well. They are about £230.00 I think but there are others that are a lot less.

The cheapest product I know of is the Tascam DR-07. About £150. I've got an old Zoom H4 and it's exceeded my expectations.

I use a Tascam DR-1 with great success in loud environments.

I am peeking at the new Sony PCM M-10 which looks great.

I think it is the Zoom H2 or the Tascam DR-07 then.

I was also thinking of the Yamaha Pocketrack 2G at only £99.  Has anybody tried one of these?

If you get the H2 let us know how it goes. I wouldn't mind having a field recorder myself and this on is on the list.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I didn't know of the Pocktrak 2G, seems like a bargain. Listen to these acoustic demos. Impressed me.

The sound quality of the Yamaha is indeed great.I have heard the Zoom H4 and obviously the Tascam GT-R1. Quality of recording is great-in the end it is a matter of the features that each unit has and the price.
