Same here, didn't to start with but its definitely grown on me!

edit - this one's my favourite, always ends up getting stuck in my head. Not an electronic "dance pop" one either, it has real guitar in it :o

I'd never heard of her.

WHAT???!!!  You've never heard "Umbrella - ella - ella"?  Or just didn't realise who it was?

That is sorta strange....even if you don't listen to pop whatsoever there is no way you could've not heard about acts like Rihanna or Lady Gaga by now  :?:

I hadnt heard of rihanna till this thread. Or gaga til your post.

And I thought you were a young spritely thing MDV, with at least half a finger on the pulse of modern beat music?!!

Watch out - you need to pay more attention to the mush... sorry, music... or you'll end up an old cynical thing like me who only likes the stuff he likes

Yep, too late for me

I havent had a clue what was 'popular' since I was about 14. I prefer to decide what I like based on what I hear rather than how many other people like it, and there are a million and one other ways to find music. Call me crazy (some do: you should see some of the looks I get from some people my age (mid-ish 20s - I'm 27) when they find out I have no clue whatsoever who any million-selling chart-topping person is....and then they have no clue who origin, meshuggah, rodrigo y gabrialla, isis, arch enemy, wes montgomery, clutch, lenny breau, nile and a slew of other people I listen to on a daily basis are )

yeah, same here.

i mean, i still like what i like, and i'm not going to buy any lady gaga stuff, but for pop music it's pretty darn brilliant, compared to the aforementioned dross like the vengaboys which was around when i was a teenager. way i see it is, i can keep an eye on popular culture and still like what i like. And i have to have heard the stuff to decide i don't like it, plus there's the (admittedly very slim) chance it might be good.

Rihanna first, yes she's a good singer, yes she's gorgeous, but here we go again another highly manufactured and forgettable song. What the f*ck is somebody like Nuno with his track record doing on something like this! Lady Gaga, When she burst onto the scene I could see she had something, but she's rapidly disappearing down music factory highway (90% sex, 10% content). Gimme something real for F's sake.

^ Actually, ("Seriously, maybe he likes it"), I was wondering that as well.

I find it hard to imagine playing on something I didn't like. And although I wouldn't go out and buy this, it's pleasant enough... and yeah, I could probably enjoy playing it with a bunch of musicians...

When it comes down to it, when you strip off the "image" and "street cred" stuff, and the "ego trip" stuff (ie do I get a solo? or wotever ) music's music... it's all pretty great to play. I've played in and fronted three bands of varying degrees of "rock-ness", and I was also bassist in a church worship band for years, which was basically AOR, ballads and some ethinic stuff. I enjoyed it all, and I enjoyed it most when the musicians were all roughly the same level and we got a vibe going.

I can't remember properly, but I seem to recall that Nuno, in interviews, came across as a down-to-earth un-assuming kind of musician - he probably does like doing this.

There must be some session musician jobs which are pretty dire, but even then perhaps more because of the personalities than the actual music.

I can barely play anything, but I see Andy's point about different musical styles being fun to play.  I'd love to be able to play jazz or country, for example, even though I don't enjoy listening to much of either.

Fair comment lads. It was a bit arrogant of me to be judgemental on this.

WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP, use your ears!
