Band of the Decade.
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:14:03 PM »
OK, so this decade there have been some pretty superb bands brought to attention, but who are your top band of the 00's?

I'll have to go with Avenged Sevenfold. 2005's Major Label debut "City of Evil" saw a huge change for them, with a brand new image and sound, they took their metalcore roots and went mental; with big catchy vocals and some great guitar parts that sounds like nobody else. It was practically overnight that the guys got huge, and deservedly so. Then, after a hugely sucessful tour, they released the daunting follow up; 2008's self titled album. In my opinion, this album just filtered down everything the band was about, whilst continuing to move in many new directions.
Superb songwriters, musicians and performers- for me, A7X get the "band of the decade" moniker.

R.I.P Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan.

So, who are your guys' band of the decade?
Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Yep, jumping onto the current trends sorts you right out, commercially.

This will take some thinking. It might be Enslaved. Might be Anaal Nathrakh. Might be loads of other cats. Hmmmmm.

I'm gonna say my band of the decade are Biffy Clyro. They started out small, cult almost and by the end of the decade they are putting out material that is new, progressive but still retains their distinct sound. Not a band to bend to current trends.

Plus they hold a special place in my heart. I've followed them from the start almost, seeing them live dozens of times, witnessing the best gig of my life when they headlined the Glasgow Barrowlands for their first time along with intimate acoustic appearances. Plus they are super nice guys the half dozen times I've met them.

It's hard to name one, but my favourite is probably Hey Mercedes. And if you don't know them then you should get their first album.

Biffy is a good one for how much they've put out and how big they've got, but I find em quite annoying after a while. Mostly the singers voice, I think.

Racist. It's just cos he sings in his natural accent isn't it?

He doesn't sing in his natural accent. He sings in an almost Americanized parody version of it.

I absolutely loathe Biffy Clyro, for a gamut of reasons.

So far none of the suggestions have been great. Sorry

Biffy and Muse were both alternative bands which were acceptable in the mainstream. They both then went even more mainstream. Go figure. A lot of the other bands mentioned just haven't really made that much of an impact.

I'm going to go for the Dillinger Escape Plan. I believe their first record came out in 1999 (Calculating Infinity) and they've just gotten better from there. Their EP's are amazing and their last two releases since (Miss Machine & Ire Works). They combine technical precision, electronica and a punk rock attitude to create the most unique mix of music in modern metal at the moment.

What other band can convincingly make music that sounds like your heart is about to explode, work with Mike Patton, cover Justin Timberlake (and NiN, Massive Attack and Sound Garden), take a dump on the main stage at Reading, blow fire and god knows what else they get up to? None.

I'd heard of Grand Magus, but didn't realise JB from Spiritual Beggars was in the band.   That was cool!

The Only band to come out this decade I really liked was The Mars Volta (though I'm not sure whether they started this decade or at the very tailend of the last.).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

I'm not a fan, but I'd have to go with Muse.
