So does every single pickup manufacturer have to pay DiMarzio a license fee each time they sell a creme coloured pickup?

Nope.  No-one can sell a double cream/double white as DiMarzio owns the patent on that configuration.

Crazy huh?

The double white patent that DiMarzio holds is only for the US afaik.  So BKP, for instance, can sell double white PAFs.

I'm surprised that Gibson take this one lying down to be honest - they can PROVE prior art, which would invalidate the patent.

I'm sure this is a very good guitar. I'll go further, I'm sure it's probably just about as good as guitars get. But it is not worth the asking price, not by any stretch of the imagination.

This is a guitar that you simply wouldn't dare play for fear of scratching it. Who is it aimed at? Collectors who can't even play? Accountants? Certainly not your average working musician. I just don't see the point of it and the asking price is way beyond ridiculous.

Dimarzio claimed to have done it first when he filed his patent - however he may have "fibbed"
Applies only to double cream coils not double white and patent only really applies in USA

Similar things have happened before and since I'm sure...

A good example is that prior to selling BC Rich to another company(HHI holdings) Bernie Rico claimed he personally designed ALL the guitars in their range - however the Bich was a Neal Moser design (as was the Virgin), The Stealth was a Rick Derringer design.
But HHI has sent quite a few legal letters (of the "cease and desist" type) based on this misinformation and Bernie has sadly died so nobody can challenge what he claimed now

I am pretty sure that what diMarzio has is a "trademark" and not a patent. Same as diMarzio has the "PAF" name trademarked, which is why Gibson has to call their pickups "57 Classics" or "Burstbuckers" or what have you.

Supposedly, Larry DiMarzio actually asked Gibson permission to file for these trademarks, as the diMarzio company was just starting out then and could not afford to pick a legal fight with a established and well-funded maker like Gibson.

Apparently Gibson didn't care back in 1974 or whenever.

Eeer, is this just a Gibson with a couple of extra knobs under the pickguard?

Too many knobs in management me thinks!

Still, as my mate used to say.... "Never underestimate how many idiots there are in the world" so I'm sure they'll sell them.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I'm sure it's gonna hold its value rather well if one buys it and treats it well.

Especially if you call it a "custom limited edition" you can sell it to Gibson buyers. (Think of Gibson's target demographic.)

I love Gibson guitars but some of their marketing depresses me, especially as it has been so successful.

Anyway, none of today's collectible electric guitars will hold their value over the long term. (Think of the target demographic.)
