The Boss: first impressions!
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:30:56 AM »
Happy new year fellow BKP lovers!

After finally managing to install the pups just before leaving on hol in December, I have finally plugged the Tele... and boys (and girls) I can tell you that 2010 is starting great!

I didn't experiment much with pedals or EQ on the amp, but with a flat EQ and my usual 2 1/2 gain setting which produces a slightly over the edge clean sound, I had bags of fun, no matter what pup selection I was on. So here we go:

Bridge pup: This little one is punchy and trebbley but without what I would call the woody overtone (is probably not the right word, but it is the first word that come to mind) that the stock pups had, which made me roll off the tone knob each time I had the bridge on at this level of gain. It definitely is  a shift towards the sound I am after. Is it going to be enough of a shift, time will tell. I did a quick check with the FOD, the overdrive at low to mid level, and believe it or not but the above woody trebbley overtone and with the overdrive I found it brilliant. I'll have to play somemore to make sure I am not imagining things, and I'll try to record a clip so you can finally really have an idea of what I am talking about.

Both pup in parallel: I am not quite sure how to describe this setting yet or how I will use it, but it is pleasant.

Neck pup: As the bridge, for a neck pup it has some punch and it is trebbley. Which is briliiant as I can say good bye to the flabby and muted bass that the stock pup would produce on the low E string. It actually came to the point where I tuned the guitar in drop D to get a bit more "percussion / life" from the low string. The pup is brilliant for funky trebbley triad chords and Morello like riffs on low strings.

[I have just heard songs from Chris Cornell new album... he is gone electro! I mean it is always commendable when an artist is trying different things, but I don't think I will buy this one. Such a shame, he was one of my favourite artist lately]

Both pup in series: At first it sounded a bit strange to me. It is humbucker like but with the bridge and neck flavour. After a bit of playing around i found it is great to play powerful triad progression toward the neck on higher strings, I was actually coming up with a guitar part with 2 voices, power chords on D, A and D strings and triad chords on D, G and B strings, and I think it will sound brilliant with first voice played with the bridge pup and the second with the series setting. I'll try to record this one as well.

Finally, You might remember I was looking to have the dryness of the unplugged sound come through amplified sound. It didn't quite work at first until I used one of my old  nylon like thick plectrum. Again, some more experimenting will be required but it sounds very promising :) :)

So hopefully I will have some clips to follow. I'll try to do some with the Studio, as I realise that I haven't produced proper one yet.

I'm also a user of the Boss bridge (though in a strat) and would like to compare notes.. Any idea what year your tele is from (I see from the sig its Fender MIA)? Would you say the pickup is thicker sounding than the stock pickup?

I love the Boss pickup - it may actually be my favourite BKP as an all rounder
If I had to cover a lot of ground with 1 guitar I would want a Boss equipped tele

Nice review Jazz Rock :D

When I was choosing tele pickups, the Boss just didn't feature because I have preconceptions about what Bruce's guitar sound might be like (I don't actually know what it sounds like though )

Jonathan (Feline), you're quite fond of the Yardbird neck pickup, aren't you? (I'm very fond of it :D) Does the Boss neck have the same sweetness? From what I'm reading here, it sounds like the Boss bridge could be described as "like the Yardbird bridge but with a bit more oomph if you need it...", does that sound about right?

Would a Boss bridge and Yardbird neck fit well together, balance-wise?

Jazz Rock: on the "both in parallel" sound. I'm quite fond of that setting on a tele, and I've found it's particularly responsive to miniscule adjustments in pick heights - you can get quite large variations in the tone it generates by a minor turn of just one screw, eg just slightly lower or raise the bass side of one pickup and the "both in parallel" can suddenly turn from "not sure what to do with this" to "I love it!!" ... and, er, vice versa

I tend to use the Boss bridge a lot and team it up with a Mule or riff raff neck so I dont know how I feel about the Boss bridge compared to the Yardbird

the Boss bridge is certainly like a more muscular Yardbird (and I am glad that I forget it has a Springsteen connection as that would put me off too because I also have preconceptions about Bruce)
It is just my fave tele pickup as it covers everything from clean spank to metal for my ears
It is so good at blues , blues rock and hard rock that I would chose a Boss equipped tele as my go to guitar if I had to do a covers gig - actually an alder bodied Nasville tele with a Mothers milk in the middle and a Boss set would be my choice (with 5 way switch/push/pull to bring in other two sounds)

Quick question:  Does the Boss bridge have raised/staggered poles or are they flush with the bobbin?

(I guess it could be ordered either way)
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks for that Jonathan...

The Boss pickups are sounding more and more appealing :D

It wasn't that I didn't believe you gwEm, when you were posting about them before, it's just that the springsteen reference in my mind was just a little too strong at the time!

Luckily, I suspect I don't need to get too excited though - two different teles with BGs and one with Yardbirds probably cover the ground already in my non-gigging situation

Sorry for going off the origanal topic.   Andy I have bot  Boss bridge and a set of Yardbirds.  I would say there is a lot more clout with the boss bridge as comparred to the yardbird one. For me there is not that  vintage type tone in the boss (sorry struggle to put in into words).  The boss is a nice pickup when overdriven and can certainly handles the heavier rock/metal better than the yardbird. Though i much perfer the yardbirds on clean settings.

I have to admit I couldn't find what 'the boss' name was relating to... Let say it was too obvious :) I am not a big fan of his music but I do like the guitar sound he has on some songs.

The tele is one of the last 2007 model, bought it when shops were making room in their stock for the new 2008 model, which I wasn't keen on because of the neck profile and finish.
I have to admit that I don't have the sounds in my head just now as I have been under the weather for the past five days and the last time I played feels like a distant memory. I wouldn't have said that the stock pickup were particularly thin pickup to start with, but I think that the boss have indeed a bit more body to them (again I would need to play them again to get the sound back in my head).

AndyR: Thanks for the advice on the both parallel sound, I might play around a bit with this. I don't think it sound bad at the moment, it just sound fairly different from the sound I got with the stock pups which was one of my fav sound from the stock pups... I just have to adapt myself to the new offering. Can't remember what I was playing the other day, but I was using the both in parallel setting and it was sweet.

Philly Q: The pole pieces on my bridge pup are flat indeed but raised from the bobin.

As I said, I haven't been playing as much as I would have liked lately, hence the promised clips not out there yet. Hopefully this week end I'll get my head in tune with my fingers again and get some recording going.

That's exactly what happened to me at first , but the bridge and neck on their own were so good that I didn't worry too much...

Then I read a thread on here somewhere about a suggested method for tweaking heights on a fender (a strat mainly) to get where you want - and I found I could get all sorts of tones out of the middle position, including the "sweet spot" I was looking for...

I think your fave sound is hiding in there, waiting for you... :D

(I'll see if I can find the thread that got me going, I've got a feeling Hunter posted it...)
