usacg 51 stp, which pickups in strat alrounder build??
« on: January 09, 2010, 04:46:19 PM »
hi all,
i'm in the process of putting  together a strat type body thats going to have as follows.
humbucker at the neck
strat middle pickup
tele bridge pickup.
heres a similar type pic except mine will have a vintage 3 saddle fender bridge plate.
does anyone have any suggestions as I don't own a guitar with humbuckers and am not sure how all these pickups would work together, though I love strats and teles?
thanks,
mal.

Hi Mal
Not sure what music you play so i'll give you my faves

Ok - I see an ash body so my recommendations are
Bridge : Yardbird (Vintage)or Boss (hot vintage)
Middle : Apache (rounded tone) Irish Tour (raw but toppy) mothers milk (slinky /hendrixy tone)
Neck: Mule (59 LP tone)or VH2 (hot vintage but wiry tone) or stormy monday (darker/softer bluesy tone from alnico 2 magnet)- get 4 conductor so can be auto coil split in position 4 for a more stratty sound

strange that you say that because i've got a tele with yardbirds and a strat with apaches and i'm really happy with both.
I play a bit of rootsy blues country rock, nothing really heavy.
my only issue with the humbucker at the neck is will it fit in with the other two?
I could quite easily have two apaches at the neck and middle as I know they'll work well together but if I put a humbucker in the neck, I may need a heavier strat and tele pickup to match them up???
or possibly a lighter humbucker?
I see the stormy monday has the least output of the lot.
cheers,
mal.

sorry guys for bumping this back up the board,
I eventually went with strat neck/middle configuration and tele bridge instead of a humbucker at the neck.
tim suggested irish tours and a blackguard flat 50 bridge pickup,
I've never tried the irish tours though I have the apaches,
i've not made my mind up yet, i'm hesitating as they may be a bit too powerful for me.
any opinions will be greatly appreciated.
