All of a sudden, the GAS disappeared
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:32:51 AM »
And I am happy! :D

However I am looking at a DSLR camera so the money spending matter hasn't gone but I'm happy with the guitars I have right now.

Hope you're all enjoying the snow, it snowed more today but it was more snow than ice so I loved it. And I'm feeling so happy recently so all is well.

So I guess this is an annoucement and a little 'hi, how are you' to you all since I haven't been posting much .. Doing good? I hope so.

Have a great week/weekend ahead! PDT_003

I think my GAS will be cured when I get some BKPs for the Gibson.. then a bass guitar that I've needed for a while...

edit - as for the camera, I'm a canon man. Just prefer their layout and menu system over any other dslrs I've used. 350Ds can probably be had for quite cheap now, with a decent lens you can get some really nice pics with one.

Hey Jonny - great to hear that all is well
Being GAS free is great (may not last forever though!)

DSLRs are fun but can get expensive
For my part I was a Minolta user (and have loads of 35mm film stuff) and they were late getting their own DSLR out and maybe that is part of why they stopped making cameras
However Sony took over their designs and the Sony Alpha range seems really nice - thank god - since my lens collection will still fit !

There are a lot of good cameras out there though !

Yeah I got back last weekend :D

And I'm planning on getting a 450D, not gonna go for the 500 cause it's just video extra to the price which I don't really want. I'm gonna buy the body separately and then maybe get a wide angle or get a nice one for buildings and have many days in London, lol..

Minoltas are awesome too!

If you want a good standard lens for a Canon the Sigma 30mm is good.  You'll find it harder to get a good quality wide angle lens for a 450D as, like all other cameras in its class, it has a smaller than 35mm film sensor size and wide angle lenses have have very short focal lengths (<30mm approx.).  Short focal length Canon lenses tend to be expensive and most aren't very good IMO.

For a shorter portrait lens the Canon 50mm f1.8 is an absolutely fantastic piece of glass for the money.  However avoid the 28mm f1.8 - it's utter garbage.  I have one and wish I didn't.  As a general rule, Canon lenses are worth researching thoroughly before purchase as often the most expensive lens will be the fastest but not necessarily the sharpest.  I know nothing about Canon zoom lenses as I don't ever use them.

You're right to buy the body separately as the ones they bundle in with kits are horrible in every particular.  Good luck.

Personally I like Leicas but I'm old fashioned and prefer rangefinder cameras to SLRs. :)

Photography can give you it's own version of GAS, so you're not safe from it!

I already had a good kit of Canon lenses with a EOS 1rs body so just bought a second hand EOS 1Ds, 4 years ago. That was 2 grand back then (4 new) but they will be a lot cheaper now. The thing with the pro end cameras is although some of the older ones may have less mega pixels than some of the current compact models, the photo sensor is bigger, so that gives a better resolution. Its a bit like the medium format v 35mm in film. My one is 11.3 mp and is more than enough in my opinion and will print to a bigger size than A3 which is enough for me. Also there is always a good amount of second hand pro kit out there and is all serviceable too.

It doesnt last, or hold very well to begin with for that matter!

90% of my gas is for recording gear now, but I still look sideways at a guitar from time to time, and amps are swimming round the back of my head.

One thing I'm finding usefull lately, especially with the recording thing - rather than go for stuff thats a different vibe or tonal pallate expansion, I'm going for things that give me new capabilities entirely. A new guitar is a new sound, but a decent rackmount compressor, for example - I dont have one of those, thats a new capability, and its a sum of money that I wouldnt bat an eyelid at spending on a decent guitar, wheras I already have some superb guitars. Phase aligning box = new ability, same sort of price as a set of BKs. DI signal splitter from amp to line in and cab, same story. I'm finding this way of making gas decisions is proving wise.

I got a camera too, but only a very unremarkable one and because I had to

that's what I'd have thought, not much point- unless you're already really into photography, of course. Bit like taking up smoking to help you give up drinking if you're not...

haha that's a good point! I'm guitar GAS free (sort of), but I'm off to Birmingham first thing tomorrow morning to pick up some new forks for my bike, which aren't cheap either

I bought a TLA audio Fatman valve preamp / compressor 6 or 7 years ago and it's been one of the best bits of gear I've ever bought.  The compressor is so natural sounding (compared to the DBX one I had) and the mic pre just adds so much warmth and detail compared to your average desk mic pre.  I even compress to tape with this thing.
