Which speakers?
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:09:14 AM »
Any suggestions?

Looking for 2x12" to go into a cab I will build or have built. Will probably be convertible from open to closed-back for maximum variety. Will be plugged into a Bogner Alchemist head.

I like many styles of music, but I don't really need djents. I like brootals (sometimes) but I am allergic to V30s.

I am inclined to choose two different types of speakers, in order to keep my tone fat and to give me more miking/mixing options. I prefer a vintage-sounding bass and ballsy mids (am I allowed to say that?)

Mostly I play Stratocasters but also my Esquire and Les Pauls.

Living where I do, a lot of boutique gear is unavailable or has to be shipped in at great expense, so I'd rather not experiment too much. I had considered Weber or Scumback versions of vintage Celestions but I am open to other ideas.

I'm a recent Eminence convert, so I'm going to say look into those!

I was tempted by the darkside but never made the leap.

testing speakers is an expensive past time.

just out of interest, what eminence do you use, and what did you replace with them

40w head?  Vintage-ish tones?  Ballsy mids?

I'd go for a Celestion Gold and Heritage G12H combination, but they're expensive now.  Very expensive (£310 the pair)

Cheaper alternative would be a Celestion Greenback and a G12T "Hot 100" (£130 the pair)

Count me in ; I have always loved them in my Fender 'Twin' amp. Detailed enough  for the 'fine grain' of lower output Strat pickups , yet warm enough for anything else.  Not afraid of being pushed. :)

I got some Swamp Thangs, replaced K100s, paired with V30s. Very pleased. I made a thread on it quite recently, if youre interested.

Not saying they're for everyone, but thats my experience of them (more info than in the first post further down, inc some revisions to my initial impressions, when I miced one up).

I like G12-65's, a higher rated smoother greenback

It's definitely worth mixing a warmer sounding speaker with one with extended top for a really good range. If you don't you wind up with a one trick pony. It might be a one trick pony you really love but never-the-less limited.

I use a V30 and a G12-75T in cab based on a Mesa Boogie three quarter back; but that's only one of the many combinations that give an extended range and a little more versitility.

Forgive me for asking a lot of questions; as someone pointed out, playing with speakers is an expensive sport (like polo, sort of), especially when you live in Ukraine. So I want to get this right the first time.

Eminence fans: which Eminence speakers? I had thought about a Swamp Thang, but would it be too dark? (the Alchemist in not an overly bright amp)

I love old greenbacks, so I was also considering a pair of Scumbacks or a Celestion G12H and a G12M. Anyone tried this? Or even any of the Weber Fane clones?

As little as I like V30s, I had even considered pairing a V30 with a Greenback or Swamp Thang in the hopes that it might then sound a little less tinky and V30-like and maybe a little more like music. Maybe the darkness of the Swamper would balance out the fartiness of the V30 or something.

Unless you're only playing hard rock/metal, at volume, I wouldn't use a V30.  Others do, but I find them very harsh and cutting on the ears.

The standard Chinese Greenbacks are very nice speakers, and not massively expensive.  I have a pair in a JTM45 quarter stack.  My suggestion of a Greenback and a Hot 100 would give a very balance tone for very reasonable money.

OK, I hear "can the V30s!" which is itself music to my ears.
