Have you considered the Eminence Texas Heat? Like a Americanised greenback, certainly my favourite speaker.

If your amp can put up with 4ohms a surprisingly good budget option is two Eminence Legend GB12/8 - they are like higher watt G12Hs.

The SAs might be a bit dark, yeah. The tonkers are the only others that I've heard in comparison - they're brighter, that may be an option.

dont can the V30's, great speakers. I mix one with a Fane and it's the best speaker cab tone i've had. Not harsh at all, and it really does cut through in a band mix. They  get branded at rock/metal speakers but they sound great in my Fender Twin!

I heard Richie Kotzen with his signature Tele directly into his Cornford head with a 4x12 loaded with V30s, the sound was incredible.

I can't understand where the "harsh - rock/metal" description of V30's comes from either. The ones I have (admittedly several years old) are smooth and warm; have they changed or something? or is it all down to cab design.

It's all subjective I guess!  I find V30s have a nasty spike to them them really offends my ears and makes my teeth grate!

I think with V30's a lot is dependant on your amp. If you have a bright amp they can get nasty but with a darker amps they can be good.

They record well and have plenty of cut but they would not be my 1st choice for a home practise rig.

^ Exactly my findings - they sound best with plenty of volume.  I got decent results in a 4x12 when cranked, but not many people have that option.

Yeah, my Mesa 2x12 with V30s was great with my Mesa Rectifier head, but lousy with my Engl Savage - the CL80/K100 combination I'm using now is far superior for that amp.

for home V30 is a no no, with certain amps... i have one in a 90's Fender champ 12, perfect thick fender clean tones, the drive on that amp is shockingly bad so no speaker will fix that. But live with another guitar/key's player, V30's own it.

Depending on who you talk to, V30's are only designed to sound good with 30 watts up them, but can handle 60... also, some say that they change quite drastically after a few hours of heavy use, mine changed during the 19th/20th gig. All the harsh high mids went and the sound smoothed out. Some say that at that point the speaker is knackered, and that the V30 was designed to sound the was is was when you first bought it...

Years ago, I had a MESA 1x12" cab with a V30. I used to wonder why every guitar and amp I played sounded emasculated: tinny, farty, no bass, no balls.

Even my 335 loaded with original Dirty Fingers turned into a six-string Farinelli. It was like downgrading a hydrogen bomb to a damp firecracker.

Then I figured out: it wasn't (just) me - the problem was the speaker.
