Need help Routing
« on: January 24, 2010, 03:59:30 AM »
I just bought a set of some Bare knuckle pickups to install in my Schecter Hellraiser C-7 guitar. The pickup cavities are specifically designed for EMG type pickups/ mounting only. My question is what is the best way to route/ modify my guitar so the BKPs will fit. I knew this before I bought the pickups but I wanted to get some outside opinons before I start this project.  Thanks
Either you got it, or you dont!!!!

Normally the only difference is that the feet of the pickups BKP are deeper - so maybe a drill in a drill press or a chisel

Might be useful to tell us where the pickup is too big/tight to fit so we can give more useful advice

Maybe a quick picture would explain a lot

I've trimed the feet down with metal cutters to stop routing on a vintage guitar where they wouldn't fit.  I have fitted BK's into a Schecter Black Jack without any problems (remember to change the pots though).
So many pickups, so little time

Thank you for the helpful info instead of a sarcastic two word reply.

I don't know much about Schecters, but would I be right in thinking your guitar's a seven-string with the big rectangular soap-bar style EMGs?

I don't think the BKP seven-string pickups will fit easily into those cavities - they're shaped more like conventional humbuckers.  They may drop into the cavities but leave big gaps in the corners, or they may be wider than the EMGs (like humbuckers are wider than P-90s), in which case you'll need some extra routing.

You'll might want mounting rings to make it look better, but then you might also need to partially plug the existing cavities so the mounting rings have something to attach to.

A job for a pro, probably?  :(

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

i beg to differ. this is a schecter loomis hellraiser that used to have EMG707 and is now fitted with BKP. i just had to bend the legs a bit to make them fit in the cavity, and then i just screwed straight into the wood.

the only thing you need to think of before finishing your installation is to drill a hole from the electronics cavity to the nearest bridge post hole (that means you -must- remove your bridge and the posts) to run a ground wire from the bridge to the cavity, or else your strings won't be grounded and you'll have more hum.

hope that helps! it's really a piece of cake though, and fits like a dream once installed. be sure to use some springs with your wood screws, it makes pickup height setting much easier.

I was only guessing - never seen those EMG pickups up close so I didn't know what size they were.

Did you add the mounting rings afterwards, to cover the gaps in the corners?

Sack it, use a hand drill like a real man. Remember to shave off an extra few mm to get the weight balance right without the mojo points escaping.

I'd see a pro if I was you, maybe consider adding mounting rings if you don't have some already?

Indeed, just hangin' out.  Just outside of town.
