Apple iPad

http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/

Just been announced today!

As cool as I think it looks, I don't think i'd buy one. I've already got a fairly good Macbook and i expect it'll be ludicrously expensive when it makes its way over here.

Still, pretty cool piece of kit! Wish they'd announced a new iPhone instead, my contracts out next month!

I'd only have to wrap it in cling film  :(

Jizz splashes everywhere and keyboards are cheap enough to replace every 3 months.. I'll be "sticking" to a desktop.  :P

So.... it does exactly the same as a laptop, but doesn't have the inconvenience of being too big.

And it does exactly the same as an iPhone, but doesn't have the inconvenience of being too small.

I think the manufacturers need to start using Venn diagrams to show what things one techno-thing does but another doesn't.  And what things they all do.

I can't be bothered with any of it.  Whatever you buy is obsolete after a week.

be good for reading books/rss/bkp in bed or maybe on a train but other wise I wouldn't have much use for it otherwise but iphone OS means you can only use a single application at a time which is a bit annoying

be quite interesting to see how atom based windows slate PCs compare when they come out

this is a "premium product" for people that have to have such things.  it's a fashion accessory more than anything else.  they're lovely looking things, and of course the technology is amazing, but who needs it?  and at the "premium price" apple will charge.

Indeed it will be. There will probably be a 3D version of it soon.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Uh-oh, someone's taught apple a new word to put an 'i' in front of again.

Also, how fragile does this thing look? What are you supposed to keep it in? A laptop case, maybe...

Now if they would bring out a digital SLR remote control and viewing application for that thing it would rock. If I listened to Steve and kept it in the kitchen, her indoors would have put a hot saucepan on it within a week I reckon.

Me too, I own an iphone and a macbook.

As for the eBook reader. Most eBooks come with a sort of matt screen design, so to resemble an actual page. Which also puts a lot less strain on your eyes. But the iPad has a regular screen, so i'm not sure how well it'll function as an eBook.

I will reserve judgement until I've played with one but I think I'm a bit more enthusiastic than most here in principle.  I can see me replacing all my print magazine subscriptions for electronic versions for example, I'm not sure whether the screen will be as good as eInk for book reading though - have to see.  I think I'd use it a lot.  Aside from coding and delivering talks, my laptop (upon which I write this) uses a lot electricity to surf the web, use e-mail, watch video, look at photos, read academic papers on PDFs and listen to audio all of which could be done on something smaller, lighter, more efficient and with a better interface for such activities.  I shall definitely want to give this a try.

Whether it's worth the money is something for everyone to decide for him or herself.
