Bare Knuckles Pickup Help....
« on: February 12, 2010, 12:06:54 AM »
Brad here,
I am dying to get into Bare Knuckle pu game but have not found enough in the way of sound bites and the like to figure out which pickup is THE pickup I am looking for. I currently have a Seymour Duncan '59 (neck) and aSD Duncan Distortion (bridge) in my '76 LP Custom.  Because I am most familiar with the Seymour Duncan line... I am looking for (without being insulting to Bare Knuckles) BK's version of the Duncan Distortion to use as a starting point. I am looking at the Rebel Yell's or the Nailbombs. Any help with would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

So what guitar & amps are you using - what band/tone are you aiming for?

Well the Duncan Distortion is a Ceramic pickup, and a very middy (and muddy) one!
The BKP cliosest to the Sh-6 would be the Painkiller but it is much clearer and a hundred times tighter than the Sh-6!

I run a JCM 800 2203 reissue through 2 1960 BV cabs. Music is melodic rock i.e. Quicksand, Foo Fighters. Love the tightness of the bass with the duncan dist, but would love more clarity, bigger sound, less sizzle, and one that cleans up a bit better. I use both my guitar volume and a volume pedal live.

p.s.  I am, by no means, partial to the ceramic magnet.

Did you AskTim(tm) ? The guy is just incredibly good at picking up (lame pun, sorry) the right pup for your guitar, style and requirements.

Afghan Dave,
Please take no offense to my previous post...  It's just with that many views and no subsequent replies I was assuming/ confirming that was the case. This is going to be my first BK pickup and as I am not swimming in cash I just want to make the right call. In this case, as many opinions as possible is a good thing. I would thank you for replying so quickly and giving me my reference point.

So, with the Cold Sweats, can you coil split them? and if so, do they sound pretty good split?

I have a calibrated set of Cold Sweats in my PRS Standard 24. They can be suppplied as 4 conductor and are therefore easy to coil split (diagram supplied with  pickup). Very pleased with mine both in full humbucker mode and in coil split mode. I was a little worried about installing a (relatively) high output ceramic pickup but found that they can cover a wide range of music styles especially with the coil split.
