« on: March 02, 2010, 02:25:06 AM »
Ok i narrowed down my choice for the ultimate thick/big/fat sounding humbuckers to
1) suhr aldrich
2) BK holy diver
3) dmz tone zone
4) anderson h3

which one has the thickest/biggest/meatiest sound? lots of low mids and lows.

1) suhr aldrich - hottest/more upper mids/aggressive
2) BK holy diver - more fluid/open/organic/balanced
3) dmz tone zone - thickest/compressed/too nasal/kinda flubby
4) anderson h3 - less hot, more articulated

I'd love to have all of them, but still would pick the holy diver
the motor city afwayu is one great option too, but for the tones you're looking for, I'd stick with the Diver
I miss mine

Forgive me for saying it, but no-one here is likely to recommend any other type of pickups than BKPs (this is the BKP forum after all...), primarily because most of us firmly believe (from our own experience) that there is a BKP for essentially every application, and they're all top-notch at what they do.

Perhaps a better way to find out what you want is to work out which BKP best suits your needs, and then decide for yourself whether that's what you want or whether you want a different manufacturer's product instead.
I'm not convinced that the holy diver is actually what would work best for you. What type of guitar (+ wood type etc), and what style are you aiming at? Also what other gear do you have? Perhaps then we'd be in a better position to advise...

Mr. Hellstyle,
Where would you put the nailbomb and painkiller as far as the tone compared to the pickups listed above?

Err, wait... IIRC, I've actually seen posts here where some regular _did_ praise some other brand - or at least mentionned SOB ("Some Other Brand", yes) as a worthwhile alternative or advised to stick to SOB if the OP was happy with it. And FWIW, that's one of the strong points here - BKP lovers, indeed, but not necessarily die-hard fanatics. I mean, we do love our BKPs because we find they just rule, but we know how subjective such a topic can be, don't we ?-)

primarily because most of us firmly believe (from our own experience) that there is a BKP for essentially every application, and they're all top-notch at what they do.

Now this is another story

As far as I'm concerned, I don't have that much experience with pups - all I can honestly say is that
1/ both pairs of BKPs I own are incredibly better than the pups they replaced on my guitars
2/ I now know how much a difference pups can make
3/ every _similar_  guitar with SOB pups I've tried since did sound - more or less - dull, lifeless, and either wimpy, muddy or shrill. Sometimes it was so obvious I couldn't believe it, sometimes it was just "not that bad but a bit lacking", and as strange as it might seem, the ones that that felt in the second category were not necessarily the most expensives (ok, I probably expect more from a €3000 guitar than from a €300 one, so I may be a bit biased here, but well...).

(snip remaining sound - lame pun, yes - advices)

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

the nailbomb and painkiller are both edgier and more aggressive than all of them
the afwayu reminds me of the nailbomb but loaded with a ton of midrange, like the painkiller, and apparently fatter than the aldrich
the holy diver is the warmest, most balanced and has the fattest lead tone (maybe not as fat as the tone zone, but much better sounding)

Of the pickups you mentioned I own the Holydiver, the Suhr Aldrich and the DMZ Tone Zone. The descriptions given so far are accurate. I would however stay away from the Tone Zone unless you like your tone a little fuzzy.

Indeed, hence my choice of the word 'likely'.
