Gibson SG special - yet another topic
« on: March 10, 2010, 07:54:13 PM »
hey guys, first post here and i'm afraid it seems to have been done to death already!

I play a gibson sg special through a carlsbro 50 top head ( - the valve overdrive is great but i can't crank it up unless recording so i use boss sd-1 and carl martin dc drive). I play mainly pop/rock stuff with my band (you can listen here http://www.myspace.com/kaguraband to some of the tunes for an idea what i'm going for).

Most of the previous threads seem to recommend pick ups for vintage ac/dc style rock or metal. I'm looking for something more middle of the road - keep the defined high end but adding abit more beef and fat tone.

any suggestions? and sorry for replaying the old gibson sg story!

thanks, james.

Hmmm.

I'd go with Riff Raffs and use a booster pedal personally, but if you want to focus your guitar a bit more I guess you could try Black Dogs?

JamesL me old sonnerjee just sat and listened to your entire playlist. Killer band mate, you Irish buggers keep delivering the goods don't you.
Pickups-wise my philosophy is stick to something like normal windings. A hand-wound fastidiously made pup like a BKP delivers a much better tonal spectrum than a machine wound stocker and allows you to tweak around all day. Between pedals, boosters and preamp settings you'll find anything you want. So Mules muchacho, anyone who can't get a good tone out of a Mule is a c*nt. Once again though inspiring band, even if you used Warpigs you'd be happy.

I have a mississippi queen set in my SG faded and they are fantastic. Warm, fat tone but still cuts thought the mix like a knife.
Mississippi Queens, Holydiver.
