Urgent Amp advice needed :E Arrgh

Ok, so my Engl plopped through the letter box this morning...

Had a quick go... basically:

The 'normal'  channel doesnt work, i get sound but its not musical, its like noise, you can just about make out what note is being picked. This happens no matter how loud the Master vol is, or how high\low the gain is.

Its not me driving the channel, its just a mush of noise :( It reminds me of when i saw a band and mid solo the guitarists amp lost volume and just put out squeaky barely musical noise (that was a Mesa :P).

The UltraGain channel seems to work fine... the amp seemed to hum for a couple of minutes after power up, like the hum from a dodgy guitar cable (except no cable was attached and it still did it???), then it seemed to disappear. This channel seems to be ok, as it sounds good!

The Pre-amp valves look quite dark at the top, but the amp is new... i take it the amps been played a fair bit??

Not been able to open it cos i had work, but 1 valve at least looks black at the top, about 1/5 of it maybe more is blackened... the others are a bit dark on the top, but seems more silvery than black?

Any ideas? How do you know when valves are dead?

Pissed off with this, i phoned the shop i got it from but no answer, will try again later.

If you swap the valves round does it make the normal channel work and the gain channel break?

not sure, i'm at work until 6:30 so cant check.

hopefully be able to get through to the shop... could be a case of demanding some new valves to go with my 'new' amp?

edit:

just spoke to Chris from the shop i got it from, hes going to have a chat and find out some possible things to try, probably end up sending amp back to be fixed... not so bad i guess!

Bit disappointed as the gain channel made me wanna keep playing and skip work

heh i meant i played it before i left home for work 8)

Spoken to them again and i'm gonna test the valves once i get home, then if needed they will send me out some new ones, rather than shipping the amp around everywhere (thus risking more valve damage i guess?)... they seemed to think it was one of the pre amp tubes gone bad...

ah well at least the gain channel works

well, i swapped all the valves about.. nothing changed.

then, i read the instruction manaul for the 10th time, and re-checked the valves.

Turns out whoever assembled the amp put the 12ax7 one (marked by hard to read printing on the back of it)  in the wrong spot, i put it in the correct one... and it worked!

After than i went out so didnt get to play it, will have a GOOD play 2mora.

So i'm happy now.. only thing is a couple of the valves are getting dark near the top quite alot... but it sounds fantastic 8)

oooh sorry to hear the ENGL wasnt working at first dude, Glad to hear you got the beast going though..

Should have years of fun with that amp! I bought an ENGL Screamer 50 nearly 2 years ago now and i'm still using it which is a long time for me I've been playing 14 years and never kept an amp longer than 8 months lol.
