NGD - totally unexpected
« on: April 06, 2010, 07:56:20 PM »
Today I set out on a mission to trade my Carvin for an Ibanez Artist. I was looking for something Jazzy/Rock looking and the Artist fit well.

Turned up at the shop and the staff didn't know what to make of it. They loved how it looked but had no idea how to price it. They said they'd phone me tomorrow to let me know.

So off I went to other shops I regularly visit, one shop wouldn't even consider looking at it because they knew nothing of Carvin and didn't know what it was worth.

Frustrated I went off to another shop, turned up and tried out some guitars, surprisingly I fell in love with a Jim Root Telecaster. Not what I was looking for, but something hit me and I loved how solid it felt and how easy it was to play.

Guy in the shop gave me a really low offer so I said no and went on my way.

So I tried one last shop, the shop I've bought quite a bit from in the last year or so. Again turned up, got a better offer and looked around.

Tried out a 72 reissue Tele (two humbucker thing with a wierd scratch plate and pickups), next I tried out an American Standard Tele, Felt cool but didn't really amaze me.

Looked up and saw a Jim Root tele but in a different colour to the one I previously tried. Still loved it even through a Fender Blues Deville. Then I went onto business.

They offered me £440 for my Carvin off the £699 asking price for the Tele. Hesitant I went off to the nearest cash point to check my balance. Too little money (damn unemployment) so I went back and tried to haggle.

They wouldn't come down on the price but offered me a plan to pay 10% of the remainder over 10 months. I snatch it instantly as this works well for me as I'll be working again near the end of the month.

So I'm now the proud owner of a Fender Jim Root Telecaster. Not what I was considering at all but I've fallen in love with it, it's so solid, acousticly loud and warm. Plugged in it's very versatile, very clean jazzy tone with the neck pickup, to slightly overdriven blues tones to very chuggy metal rhythms. I'm not in love with the EMG's, but they're ok for now till I get money together to go passive. I used to HATE telecasters as much as Roo, but I've now developed a love for them.

I'd been hankering after a white version of one of these for a while. The satin finish has a habit of polishing up I'm told.

Congrats!

I was after the white one to begin with because I like ebony fretboards. But unfortunately the one shop that had one was asking too much.

The matt finish is going to be a pain but I don't, I've had a Gothic V before and a mate of mine has a Gothic Explorer so I'm expecting it to go odd. The white finish would of been easier to keep clean but nevermind.

Cool choice!  It's definitely one of the more interesting signature models out there.  Even I've considered getting one, the hardware is good and I think the simplified electronics are neat.

There's no reason why a Tele can't work as a rock guitar, especially with the modern chunkier bridge.  :D

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

That looks neat.

I might have to try some tele's out now it seems that more people are getting into them who may have previously overlooked them. I used to hate them too, then I played an old one in vintage & rare while playing some pedals, and I tried a tele in JPF Amps place when Frank took a look at my Sommatone.

looks like you got a nice deal. what passives do you fancy in it?

He's one of the guitarist's in Slipknot.

As for passives, I may go for something lower out put, so maybe something like Duncan 59 and Jazz or a set of Mules. But that won't be for a while.

That looks awesome. The new Jim Root strats look really nice as well. Basically the same but just a strat instead of a tele!

Congrats, I have also considered one of these myself, if I ever bought one though I would HAVE to switch out the EMG pickups, I don't like active pickups at all.

BKP's own: Irish Tours, Mule(b), Black Dog(b)
BKP's had: Riff Raffs, Nailbombs
