Glad it worked out alright :D

Once you've got over the first song or two, it's usually quite refreshing, isn't it?

The worst (scariest) one I ever had to do was in my last band. We were a two guitar set-up where I did the lead vocals. The bassist couldn't make it, so we decided to go as a three-piece, with me on bass and vocals. I can play bass ok (ish), but bass and front-man is a different kettle of fish. We did two rehearsals - first was dire, second not quite so bad, but certainly not giggable. We decided that "something'll happen, it'll be alright on the night..."

I figured out I ought to listen to the Police for a few days - and discovered how Sting managed it. When we turned up, I showed them in the soundcheck the approach I was gonna take - and the other two got really scared . In the end it was the best gig we ever did in that band!

... I dunno, it takes you right out of your comfort zone, half the on-stage cues are missing, and you're worried that you won't be able to deliver for the punters, but somehow it seems to work out and you learn new stuff about the line-up (and yourself)... hope there's still room for Martin, with your new-found skills, when he gets back!

good story - i like the bassist/lead vocals idea.. thin lizzy, motorhead etc. gives a good dynamic on stage

pleased you pulled it off dave!

^ Yeah, I learnt to appreciate, a lot more the likes of Phil Lynot, Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash), and Lemmy (less so, actually, he's almost playing rhythm guitar on the bass ) during those coupla weeks... I could not do the job I can hear the first two doing on their live albums.

For the mechanics of Singing and Bass-playing, I'd put Phil Lynot and Martin Turner way above Sting (he seems not to play too much during the vocal lines - hence I was able to copy this method!).

It's a different kettle-of-fish for what TF had to do, though... (and the other guitarist in my band when I switched to bass duties) ... there are places where what you've learnt just doesn't seem to work without the other guitarist.

The thing is, the original does work in most cases - half the audience really won't notice  - but it's all about believing it will work (or trying not to be scared it might not!)... I always found "extreme arrogance" helped! (I'm not sure TF's got this to fall back on quite like I have! The other guitarist in my band certainly didn't... I didn't realise quite how humble about his own abilities he was until rather late in the day...)

EDIT: Martin - if you're home now, reading, between the spasms of pain, TF was probably utter sh1t without you, but don't tell him  ... hope you're on the mend... :D

Similar thing happened to me a few years back was at a gig and the other guitarist simply didn't show up at all, just had to fill in all his parts and or decide if his or my part was more important for that particular part of the song..

Hard to judge when on the fly and without rehearsal but I managed it.

i think the big problem with the main guitarist also being the main singer is it can look very ego-istic on stage. also its nice to have the attention switched between two places on stage to keep people interested.

jack bruce is another example of an excellent bassist/singer i thought of today.

anyway.. way off topic now!

^ Big +1 to both of those... I understand what Jack Bruce does, a lot more than Geddy Lee though, he's just a crazy man, how does his brain work???!

 And?... where be the problem?

Actually, I always found that playing "2nd guitar" while singing freed me up to be a lot more egotistical on stage
