^i wasn't bashing the diezel- i said i'd prefer an engl, but i still gave the VH4 the thumbs up- just the style of th engls suit me more

and that guff about the diezel having too many knobs, and more than engls? the engl se i tried had twice as many...

what do I wantto know about them?, okay....  after starting off playing thrash in the late 80s/early 90s I moved on to bands playing 'rock' for almost all of my 20s. I'm now 30 and have been playing in a metal band but have struggled to find an amp that combines crushing low-end chunk, screaming midrange (not scooped) and an articulate punchy tone (not Recto fizz).

I'm currently using something of my own making which has gotten me ALOT closer but I'm nowhere near being clever enough to wire up all the options for channel switching so I'm looking for that tone ready to go in a box with all the four-channel bells & whistles madness.

So.... does it deliver the goods for full-on metal and is there anything else like it for a lower price? - i.e. is it worth the huge amount of cash they want for it?

For the sounds your after try a Koch Powertone II. I would say that cos I've got one but they sound incredible and are a lot cheaper that Deizels.

ok, I tried out a Diezel VH4 on Friday via blackmachine.co.uk (his guitars are awesome btw), impressions... the Diezel is just head & shoulders above anything else I've tried.

The clean channel does that spankin Fender Twin thing, the 2nd channel gives you may shades of lower-gain dirt, the 3rd does all of the JCM800 to 900 type gain tones and beyond then the 4th is just voiced slightly different.

What I like most is that it manages to have SERIOUS lowend chunk and alot of gain while sounding very Marshally - most higher gain amps always sound Boogie-esque to me.

Apparently the Diezel Herbert is more 'metal' - I'll certainly try it out before making an actual purchase, but the tone I have in my head in pretty much that plexi midrange roar with loads more gain and a very tight low end that you can feel in your chest with low-string chugging. This is what the VH4 achieves.

As for having too many knobs, I can't say that having seperate EQ and gain for each channel is much to deal with AND the panel is laid out very clearly and intuitively.

For comparison sake, I tried a VHT Pitbull Ultralead on Friday too and have already tried an Engl Powerball (which I remember to be very nice and will revisit that one). I also tried a Boogie Triple Recto at BlackMachine's place and it was nice, but the Diezel was better.

Oh, one final mention - the Tele-style guitar at BlackMachine had a BKP Miracle Man in the bridge and a Stormy Monday in the neck.  All I can say is that they are seriously tasty pickups. I tried a PRS into the Diezel but the BlackMachine with BKPs was just killer.  I now have some BKPs on my 'to buy' list as well as the Diezel.

^i thought the cleans on the vh4 were very average... compared to both a vht UL and engl se

just remember that for the price of a vh4, you can get a better engl than a powerball- for those marshall-y tones, a savage might be more what you're after than a powerball (i haven't tried a savage though, but i have a savage se on order)

but i admit, the vh4 (bar the clean channel, which wasn't even terrible, like a 5150/6505) was pretty darn nice!

I will be trying out a few more amps before parting with any cash, but the VH4 just had the tone I'm looking for right away.

For £900 (ish) the Powerball represents excelent value and I will give that amp another bash before any decision is made.

I'll also be upgrading my own homebrew high-gain valve amp with an OEI OT to see if that will get me more of that metal riffage tone (heh heh).

Too right they are, that's a good price for sound quality like that. Deizels are twice that money and more!

when i was in london in the summer, i tried a koch multitone in holiday music in leyton/leytonstone, east london. They didn't have a powertone when i was there, but the bonus was i was very impressed with the multitone (i proably wouldn't have tried a multitone if they'd had a powertone)!

Holiday music is where i got mine. Machinehead in Hitchin, Herts' are Koch dealers too and as far as i know they are the only two in the country so far.

Raising an old post up from the dead here but i was so impressed i just had to.

Extensivly tried out the Diezel Herbert today, will be buying it on Wednesday.

All i can say is that this is the amp i've been looking for all along, the clean channel is perfect, sparkly and clear and no break up atall.
The second channel has a sort of JCM800 tone going on untill you flip the extra gain switch and then it becomes a perfect channel for boosted solos.
The 3rd channel is a tight as hell rythm channel, huge amounts of crunch even with the gain dial on 4.

The bass from this amp is monsterous, i had it running through an orange cab and the walls of Mansons were litterally pulsing along with it, and i didn't even have it past 3 on the master.

Pickups wise i was using a Ceramic Warpig in the bridge of a Gibson Flying V and an Alnico Warpig voiced like a Coldsweat coil tapped in the neck.

What i also love about this is that the only pedals i will need are a tuner and a wah in my line.

This looks like it will be my rig for a long time :-)
