ok, I tried out a Diezel VH4 on Friday via blackmachine.co.uk (his guitars are awesome btw), impressions... the Diezel is just head & shoulders above anything else I've tried.
The clean channel does that spankin Fender Twin thing, the 2nd channel gives you may shades of lower-gain dirt, the 3rd does all of the JCM800 to 900 type gain tones and beyond then the 4th is just voiced slightly different.
What I like most is that it manages to have SERIOUS lowend chunk and alot of gain while sounding very Marshally - most higher gain amps always sound Boogie-esque to me.
Apparently the Diezel Herbert is more 'metal' - I'll certainly try it out before making an actual purchase, but the tone I have in my head in pretty much that plexi midrange roar with loads more gain and a very tight low end that you can feel in your chest with low-string chugging. This is what the VH4 achieves.
As for having too many knobs, I can't say that having seperate EQ and gain for each channel is much to deal with AND the panel is laid out very clearly and intuitively.
For comparison sake, I tried a VHT Pitbull Ultralead on Friday too and have already tried an Engl Powerball (which I remember to be very nice and will revisit that one). I also tried a Boogie Triple Recto at BlackMachine's place and it was nice, but the Diezel was better.
Oh, one final mention - the Tele-style guitar at BlackMachine had a BKP Miracle Man in the bridge and a Stormy Monday in the neck. All I can say is that they are seriously tasty pickups. I tried a PRS into the Diezel but the BlackMachine with BKPs was just killer. I now have some BKPs on my 'to buy' list as well as the Diezel.
