DIEZEL AMPS, anyone?
« on: November 30, 2005, 11:34:42 PM »
Anyone tried a Diezel VH4 amp?  I keep hearing about how great they're supposed to be but it looks like there is no UK distributor as yet so I can't even travel to a stop that stocks them.

So, has anyone got one, tried one, heard one at a gig?

I think TO sometimes uses 1 at his band practises.

From what I remember, he's not much of a fan of it

The UK dealer is Blackmachine. www.blackmachine.co.uk
I think they sound ok, just too many dials for my liking.

I think he said something about it sounds too 'Modern' for his tastes :)

Ben does use a Diezel, but only because the Roccaforte's are sounding like roccafarts at the moment.  Last night he was using it with 2 different guitars, one was the strat with the Gajic neck and VHII, the other was a PRS Standard with the new BK Rebel Yell pickups (which are awesome!).

For me, the Diezel sound is OK, but not great.  Having heard both guitars through my own amps, I know that the guitars sound excellent (the PRS is mine, and I built the Strat up for Ben).  I thought the cleaner tones were better than the overdriven ones.  But I thought that they lack some openess and the sound was a little dull, though Ben thinks some of this is the Diezel cabs.

Igor was using a Diezel too, but changed to the VHT Pitbull and now gets a much better sound.

I've played both the Diezel Herbert and VH-4 extensively. What would you like to know about 'em?

EDIT: Ooops, I was wrong. Herbert isn't Diezel's son.

what do I wantto know about them?, okay....  after starting off playing thrash in the late 80s/early 90s I moved on to bands playing 'rock' for almost all of my 20s. I'm now 30 and have been playing in a metal band but have struggled to find an amp that combines crushing low-end chunk, screaming midrange (not scooped) and an articulate punchy tone (not Recto fizz).

I'm currently using something of my own making which has gotten me ALOT closer but I'm nowhere near being clever enough to wire up all the options for channel switching so I'm looking for that tone ready to go in a box with all the four-channel bells & whistles madness.

So.... does it deliver the goods for full-on metal and is there anything else like it for a lower price? - i.e. is it worth the huge amount of cash they want for it?

i tried a vh4 in the oxford guitar gallery last summer (they'd got one in for someone who then decided he didn't want it, afaik, they aren't a dealer)

i liked it (i tried it through an engl vintage 30 cab), but i thought its cleans were the onyl thing about it that really sucked, and its high gain channels weren't SUPER saturated, like an engl, for example.

Verdict: IMO, really cool, but substandard cleans on an amp of its price, and more of a hard rock amp than a metal amp... (i was trying it head to head with an engl se and a vht UL)

i'd take an engl over it, i suppose is what i mean- but i still give the vh4 the thumbs up!

haven't tried a herbert :(

arent these thousands of £££\$$$???

Engl all the way imo!!! Reasonably priced, built like tanks and can melt faces and make small children cry, and they dont have a shed load of channels\fiddily controls to annoy people lilke me :P

+1 for ENGL. Diezels are extremely overpriced for what they are... which is way too many controls.

Okay, enough Diezel bashing. An amp is worth what you're willing to pay for it. I've owned Engl, and I can tell you that they are not the same amp. If I had to choose between Diezel and Engl, the Diesel would win, hands down.

If you want to hear a really good VH-4 tone, check out late Dokken, during Lynch's brief return. (The Live in '95 DVD for example) Since my guitar is the same as his, and my gain structure is similar, I can tell you that getting that tone is well within reach with this amp.

The VH-4 is incredibly versatile and has really good resolution and projection, tons of gain, and the most complex footswitch outside of a Bradshaw rig.

Build quality is ultra-high, too.

If you like a modern recto'd tone, but with a bit more mids and versatility, then this is a great amp for you.

For my style, I prefer the Roccaforte hi gain heads. The VH-4 is definitely worth tracking down, tho.
