BKPs for my LP Std?

All right, I finally emailed Tim and he recommended me the Crawlers :)  Funny, 'cause I'm sure someone (maybe Ratrod) recommended them to me soon after I joined the forum, and after months of wavering all the way between Mules and Warpigs, here I am back again.

And I'm sure I remember Ratrod talking about the Santana-ish tones he got from the Crawler neck -- turns out the Abraxas and Crawler use the same neck, DC7.6K Alnico IV (Tims says). So I can aim for those smooth singing leads on the neck, and dig some hefty chunk out of the Crawler bridge. Cool.

Now I just need to choose covers.  I kinda dig the psychedelic-looking burnt chrome 8)  though maybe it might look a little funny on my black LP.  Perhaps just good ol' regular chrome (like what I got, which is a bit boring, but at least I know it looks OK) ....

I just made a pickup change to my Les Pauls.  I got a Black Dog set and put it on my 53, replacing the Abraxas set there.  I put the Abraxas set onto my chambered LP, replacing the Riff Raff and Stormy Monday set.

On the Black Dog, if you are a Jimmy Page fan, they are the pickups.  Not as compressed as the Abraxas, more bottom end than the Riff Raff and the neck has that singing sustain that page is noted for.  I had opted for the set that Jimmy Page used to have on his LP, raw nickel cover on the neck and (reverse) zebra bridge.

They don't push as much as the RY's (still my favourites), but are more open than the Abraxas.  Interstingly the Abraxas work better on the chambered LP.  The sound is not as driven as on the 53.  I think it is to do with the weight.  The 53 is the lightest LP I ever played.  The chambered comes in around the same weight as an average LP (before it was chambered it was a beast!).  I will play them this week to get a better feel for the differences.

The wife has many errands for me today (I snuck the pickup change in yesterday!).  I still have to put the Riff Raff/Stormy Monday on the 335 - I need to start that with a clear head so I will leave it till nect week.  I'm trying to get Ben to come around too, but he is busy writing and auditioning.  I hope by the end of the month I can get him here and set something up for recording.

Phil, how would you say the Black Dogs differ from the Mules or VHII's, in an LP if you have tried em both in one? Cheers

I have them in my Tokai Love Rock, which is quite a hefty slab of tone woods, whereas the other Tokai with the Emeralds is pretty light. The Black Dog loaded Tokai sounds rich and dark, with a tone that is very broad spectrum middy. The Emeralds are incredibly punchy and really suit the lighter guitar.

Maybe with what Phil's experienced, I should swap them around...

Hi Tom, I haven't used the VHII in a Les Paul, mine are in a PRS so it is a bit different.  I only have a mule neck too, in that the Black Dog has more gain but is not overly powerful.  If you think of 'Since I've been loving you', then you will have an idea of the sound (I was going into a valve amp high gain channel with no effects, and getting this tone).

late reply, sorry. If your into riff driven music (no matter how heavy) I w ould suggest Black dogs. I play every thing from "master" metallica to thin lizzy with mine. IMHO the midrange is where its all at, and BD's are the only pick up for mid definition.
Currently abusing Ibanez, Conklin & Hohner guitars & basses Laney, Marshall, Ashdown & Hartke amps

What abouut nickel-or aged nickel?

Yeah, the nickel and raw nickel are standard options for the Crawlers, and both look nice and classy.  Probably go for one of them, as I kind of feel I'd like to have at least a slightly different look than the old stock chrome-covered pups ... just to mark the change!

Aged nickel looks cool, though if it costs a bit more, well, the Crawlers already cost a bit more, and the other nickels look as good to me. I have to save a few quid for a BKP T-shirt to go with the pups, after all! 8)
