What's the tone Nailbomb is after?
« on: May 03, 2010, 07:50:02 PM »
May be the most stupid question of the year but...
It seems that all BKP models are named after famous songs, but I don't know that there's a famous SONG named Nailbomb though I though myself as a metalhead. I just know that there's a BAND called Nailbomb, which is a side project of ex-frontman of Sepultura.
So is the tone of this band that the Nailbomb pickup is after, or there's such a song that I missed?

So could we turn this into a general thread where we confess our ignorance and admit we don't know what songs etc quite a few of the pickups are named after, and those who are more knowledgeable can educate us on the history of music?

There have been about 20 of those threads.

But yeah, since your answer seems a little uncertain, lyonk, it is named for cavaleras side project.

So it's after.... a BC Rich Warlock with EMGs into a Marshall?
Sorry, I really did NOT think that was the tone it was after.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Tim doesnt try and replicate the actual tones. He names the pickups for a vibe they fit with.

It's just... I  can see where the Miracle Man is coming from, I get the vibe of the Warpig, Black Dog and the classic hot rod approach of the Holy Diver... but .... "Nailbomb"??? Somehow I thought it was about something else.

well, the Diver sounds a lot more like Jerry Cantrell or Doug Aldrich than like Vivian Campbell on the first Dio albums

Nailbomb (the band) wasn't EMG only
Max and Alex Newport used to play Gibson SGs, apparently with stock nickel covered (498t?) pickups
the fact is that the BK Nailbomb is a 90's sounding metal pickup, so a lot of bands or song names could fit

by the way, I just found this video

nailbomb happened a long time before he used ESP guitars with sh-6
by that time, he used a couple Gibson SGs (black Standard with stickers and a red Special) and some Bc Rich Warlocks (white, red, black)
I think the BC Riches had EMG and the Gibsons had stock pickups
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Seeing that Nailbomb was also Alex Newport's band (which people seem to forget)... pretty sure he used stock Fender stuff. He had a lot looser tone & style then Max did.
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

Thanks for all the inputs!
Can I continue confessing my ignorance? Let's talk about Warpig too! I surely know which song it is referring to. But the question is which era.
No matter how great the song is, IMHO I don't think the original 1970 recording (as well as the later remastered version) sounds good due to plain reasons on recording technology limits. Thus I don't think that it's the 1970 tone that the Warpig pickup is after. So is it the recent tone of Tony Iommi that the Warpig pickup sounds like? Or, maybe again, it is named after a vibe it fits with? If so, can anyone give me more ideas of the amp/pup setup it sounds like?

You're also welcomed to hijack the topic, because the reason I started this thread is that Painkiller is the 1st and only BKP I got so far. To my ear it really nails the tone of the song painkiller, both the pros and cons. I like the mid characters of Mesa Mark series used in the song, but I feel the bass is still a little too soft for metal, exactly like what I hate about the real Mesa Rectifier (not these from CD, which were improved by studio magic). If there's a pickup sounds like the BKP painkiller but the bass is a tad more aggressive then it'll be perfect for me. So I wonder if there's another BKP model that suits me better. But the names of most other BKP models give me the impression of Marshall amps, which has a blade-like highs that I don't like. Can anyone recommend a BKP sounds like Mesa but with more aggressive bass? Note that my understanding on "aggressive" doesn't necessarily mean hotter. I play technical metal (hope my techniques deserve the word ^_^) so I don't need super hot pups. So maybe there's any lower output BKP that I missed?

Totally agree! I'm using Engl Blackmore. Now with the Painkiller it's pretty close to the sound I'm after.
Just wonder if I can get even closer with other BKP models.

^ This.

Very few of the BKP pickups, especially the humbuckers, are "replicas" of the gear used on the songs they're named after.  The names just give an idea of the character of the sound.  On the whole I think it works pretty well.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
