doing a schenker harlequin finish

how would one go about this? start with a black V and spray the white parts, or the other way around? i have done some research and it seems michael has had both done in the past. on the part you spray, would it be a good idea to strip the finish, rough it up, or just leave it?

anyone know someone who would do this type of work?

It's probably best done from scratch, but on an existing guitar I'd guess black over white would give much better coverage, with just a few coats, than white over black.  Then lots of clear coats over the top to get rid of the "step" between white and black.

The thing which always interested me was the scratchplate - presumably it's two plates, cut down the middle, then glued along the edges.  Could be tricky to get that right.

I'm currently doing one already - although the customer has chosen a different colour scheme (claret and blue) as he's an Aston Villa fan as well as a Schenker fan

The pickguard is actually just spray painted rather than two different coloured plastics - I have seen this guitar later on when the paint was worn off the plate a bit

There's an Edwards one too, which looks identical (apart from the finish!) to the white V I had.  I've seen some Grecos in the Schenker finish too.

I was eyeing up a "matt" black Gibson V yesterday. Didn't try it or see a price, but I was almost tempted to "have a go". (This was approx 1/2 an hour before GAS struck on the new Roadworn).

Would a "half-finished" guitar like the Fadeds be a good candidate (and possibly cheaper) for a refinish like this?

Yeah, I think it would.  A thin nitro finish, easy to strip or just to use as a base for the new finish.

yes, i've seen the edwards one, it looks cool. and there is indeed 80s aria and greco ones out there.

the thing with all the above is that the white is the more creamy gibson white, would prefer brilliant white for the white part.

the tokai and epiphone ones are alder/maple unfortnately

I recommend stripping and refinishing.

When refinishing, remember: not all masking tapes are created equal. Get good quality tape if you want to avoid runs.
