recommend me some headphones

I'm thinking of getting new headphones, been looking at some Sennheiser HD650s, anyone got any recommendations around the £200 that I should look into?

Doesn't matter if it needs a headphone amp or not, just needs to be epic with Meshuggah :D

Does open air make a difference? If not, check out Grado SR 225i's.

Go to your closest store which sells headphones you like or would like to look more into. Bring Meshuggah and then all you need to worry about is to make sure you remember to leave and not be stuck in an audiophile trance when you find a good pair.

Audio Technica ATH-M50s are my favourites.

I dont own a set, I have some at work, but I like them a lot better than my HD25s and Ultrasone Pro 750s. They have the speed and control of the HD25s, the low end extension of the pro750s without it being hyped like the 750s, and much more natural, clear mids and top end than either. Soundstage and seperation is more like the 750s, but the 750s are better at that, if not by much; they make the HD25s sound congested and 1D (which they arent).

Mark I just had a quick google of your recommendations, are these flatter EQ type mixing headphones?

I don't know of any shops in the Liverpool/Manc areas that would stock nice headphones let alone let you A/B them. (well apart from single brand shops like bose and sony) So it would be a case of order online and be happy with what I get.

Forgot all about Grado! One big thing puts me off them, the 225i's seem to be half the price of the HD650s in the states, but similarly priced here, so I perceive the Grados as getting less for my money.

I've been using Sennheiser hd280s, and really like the sound of those, but i've also tried a pair of AKG (can't remember which model, but they were about £200 i think), and they blew my mind.

Yes, they're all billed as or used as studio monitor and mixing/reference phones

The bigger Curry's carry a larger stock of Sennheisers. For music listening you can't go wrong with them.
If you want them for music AND mixing, I looked into this recently and bought a Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, the "softer" sounding 250 ohm version. I'm very happy with it, it's very balanced and transparent.

GAK had a great deal on an AKG 171 as well. That is also a very good one, though it's not closed.

You had the wrong ear cushions; you probably had the cheap foam pads on yours, not the L-Cushions.

I love my Grado SR80s sound wise, although I have the foam pads and they do get a little itchy/uncomfortable. First I've heard about those L-Cushions, will have to check them out.

+1 for the ATH-M50's, they are much nicer than the grados mentioned, I know because I owned both.  They outperform the Seinheiser 595's and are far better than anything Sony produces, I've owned them all.

Yes. I shelled out money on about 5 top-grade headphones kept them for a week and decided on the ATH-M50's. Alot of people swear on the Grado SR225's but they felt just one step behind the Seinheiser 595's, which I almost kept but the ATH-M50's edged them out.
