pick up suggestion
« on: May 27, 2010, 03:36:28 PM »
Hello,

I have a epiphone dot and wish to change a pair of bare knuckle pickups. Which one should I go for the sound of Noel Gallagher? I'm using a Vox AC15ccx amp. I mainly play rhythm and small part of riff like Oasis.

I'm thinking of stormy morning AII, will it have enough drive for Noel's distortion? (I wish a bit less distortion for the rhythm comparing with Oasis)
How about the Mule?

Thanks!

Welcome!

You should look at the low to medium PAF-types, which are Stormy Monday, Mule and Riff Raff.  For general indie/rock duties I would look at:

* AIV Stormy Monday - bit weaker than the others, clearer yet warm
* AIV Mule - Stronger than a Stormy Monday, bit chunkier
* Riff Raff (comes with AV) - Bright and clear, some bite

Any of the above will do what you want, so choose based on what type of tone you prefer  :)

Thanks for your suggestion.

I'm looking to the warm riff and rhythm tone in the Oasis paris 2006 unplug live
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc2vvQx-ibM
the es 335 played by Gem Archer.

The other reference is the Edge's tone played in One.

Will stormy morning AII be able to handle? Will the Mule be too hot for this?

A lot depends on how you play, and how you set your amp.  When it comes to flavours of PAF style pickups, they're the salt and pepper on the plate of tone.  Your amp and guitar, and how you set them, are the meat and potatoes.

I can't check the YouTube links here at work, but if you favour a softer, warmer tone iwth a looser bass end then the AII SMs will do what you want.

Sounds like you're already made your mind up what to buy to be honest.....

Can't decide on the A II stormy morning or the mule  :?

I don't have idea how different between the two. which one could give a tone like the one I referred to.

an a2 stormy monday will still drive an amp.. tim suggests it for slash type tone.

listening to your clips I would suggest a2 stormy monday, since all the clips have a delicate clean tone. maybe give us a clip of the overdrive tone you'd like?

For those tones, and some flexibility I'd go for AIV Stormy Mondays.  They're somewhere in between the AII SM and the AIV Mule.  A bit more open than the Mule.  If you're rocking they stay clearer and defined, if you wnat to warm them up a bit more you can back off your tone controls on the guitar.

So, AIV Stormies get my vote for you!

Why buy a boutique pickup and put it in an Epiphone that you play through a 15 watt vox? Why not upgrade your guitar or your amp. I don't want to be a spoil sport, I love pickups too, but your amp really produces 80-90% of your tone, so if you're looking to improve your tone, it would only make sense to improve the main factor in said tone. Maybe you could get an amp that's a little nicer and then get a BKP. Just my 2 cents.

An interesting, and of course popular perspective is to upgrade the amp first ;  however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that more of my intrinsic tone - was with the guitar, if the pickups were wholly fit for purpose / good.   I say this, not to propogate B.K.P sales , or to negate your comments  - but to say that my favourite B.K.P. pickups sound good through a 'Micro Cube'  - but in stark contrast , the pickups they replaced would have hidden the qualities of even my very best rig.  Add to that -  the number of  players who have 'milked' the juice out of 15 watt combos for some benchmark recordings ( Larry Carlton and Jimmy Page spring to mind ) .

I like a tooled up guitar as my own 'Keystone' component ;  confidently knowing  that if I borrow an amp, or go D.I. e.t.c. - the tone I practice with / carry with me - is going to be as representative of what I do as possible .

For example, some of my own my favourite tone moments have been through generic ( i.e. not amp or effect modelled ) recording software via a cheap interface.

I play a sub £300 'Vintage' archtop with Manhattans - sometimes through a Micro-Cube, AAD Cub 100 or Henriksen. Even with the cheapest amp and this emminently 'affordable' guitar, I have been able to acheive sounds that seem to 'keep people happy' ( and I'm no Wizard ! ).
