Woohoo! :D

Er... "...currently crafting and self-recording a collection of songs in a variety of acoustically untreated buildings..."

Still hanging around public conveniences on the sea-front, eh?

Excellent stuff. Not sure I'd call it "Folk", but what the heck, I likes it anyway, a lot.

I assume all the electrics are you? There's some really tasty playing on these songs. Songwise, my favourite is probably "Live" closely followed by "Satellites". "Disappear" I could take or leave in it's current state. I suspect the singer/songwriter might be quite fond of this one and can't quite work out why he hasn't managed to capture yet what he can hear in his head .

How do you guys record? I'm intrigued. Is it a basic live track with the odd overdub after (eg you soloing over the rhythm part you played in the live take), or is it everybody tracking to a click/guide? The reason I ask is because I want more bass in the final mix!

I'm guessing the original wavs sound better. The top-end (cymbals especially) is suffering a bit in places, which I suspect is the compression/sampling, but I'm also wanting more oink from the bass, I suspect this is in the mix or any mastering you guys did, but it could be in the mp3 or the further compression the site applies (if it does, soundclick does). I'm listening through mid-to-cr@ppy powered speakers - they usually give out a reasonable amount of bottom (too much sometimes!), but it's not here so much on these recordings...

The voice(s), accoustic, and the electrics really complement each other, but they would shine even more if they had more bottom from the bass-end of the band.

I'm listening to Satellites again after downloading it. Yep, bass isn't up enough - on my speakers (and I've now tried it with my fancy headphones as well), the kick is loads louder than the bass guitar itself... poor girl, who's picking on her?

Unless it's you voting for turning the bass down, I'd recommend telling the singer that another singer says "your voice will sound even better if you get more bass into the mix"

BUT... woo! These tracks are really good already :D

Thanks for the positive comments guys.

Andy - great review, as ever!

I'm playing all the electric stuff apart from Steve (the singer) strumming a stock American Standard Tele on Satellites.  He's doing all the accoustic strumming on a Tokai dreadnaught type thingy.

All the recording was done in various sheds with an iMac, ProTools and a rackmount thing - not sure what it's called - that's acting as a soundcard/phantom power etc.  A bit of overdubbing.

The drums were hard to record, apparently, but I didn't get involved in that.  Afterall, the guitars are more important, right?

Agree that the bass is very low... I think that we struggle in that department a little...

Also, we have to use a really high compression rate to host stuff for free on ReverbNation.  The proper stuff sounds great - real clarity.
