Wirring help
« on: July 09, 2010, 03:52:59 PM »
I'm wirring my Les Paul clone in a traditional 2vol 2tone 3way switch manner.

Can someone please confirm that I've done the right things so far?  :D

Last time i wasn't so lucky so it would be nice to know that I'm on to the right path this time.

Yes this is wired correctly for "modern" style wiring rather than "vintage", though a little messy. You might want to try colour-coding your wires, for example, black=always ground, white=always live, grey=to tone pots.

Another issue is that you need to ensure the leg of the capacitors which are soldered to the middle lug do not short out onto (touch) the casing of the pot. You could try:

1. Shortening the leg and soldering it closer to the orange "body" so there isn't any excess leg that could get bent onto the pot casing

2. Applying some insulation (pulled from some scr@p wire or use heat-shrink tubing) onto the length of leg that is near the pot casing.

Now the pickup hot wires go to the same lug on the volume pots as the grey wires, and the output to the switch will come from the middle lugs of the volume pots. Don't forget to join a ground wire from the jack onto the back of any pot!

I can post a picture of "vintage" style wiring if you want a neat example :)

Thanks a lot for your answer, Impossible  :D

Please post a picture of vintage style wiring. That would be great. And could you by any means tell me what the difference between vintage and modern wiring is. How's it going to affect your tone and so on...

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town. Here is a photo of vintage-style wiring for a LP as I do them at Feline:
