it does on some of pics.

apparantly the 60s ones have a single piece mahogany body - seems like it from the pics. The volute and neck joint look good too.

the start price is quite fair i think

it /is/ a work of art - but i rather get a 70s one with stoptail, 2 piece 'keyhole' body, dumpy headstock, and cathedral sized volute.. have a chance of affording one of those too (maybe!)

I was reading in Guitar & Bass last night that the vintage guitar market hasn't proved recession-proof and has taken a bit of a nosedive.  Apparently guitars are going for up to 50% less than they were a few years ago.

So if you can just rustle up $7,500, it might be worth making an offer.....  :P

that would be a massive bargain..(!) There something like 150 of these in existence.

That trem looks like it really shouldn't be touched if you want the axe to remain in tune...

No matter how old it is... that would ruin any deal for me.

I've got the same trem (vibrola) on my SG - never had any tuning problems with it but you can only really expect a polite 'wobble' out of it - no dive bombing. I did get problems with the top three unwound strings breaking at the end ball joint where they were held in the vibrola and used to wind some insulation tape around them. I've seen Andy Powell from Wishbone Ash several times with his original 67 V and he had a great sound - he prefered the Vibrola sounding Vs over the hardtails.

Seriously though, Alex (or anyone else), do you know something about short Maestro Vibrolos that I don't yet?

I'm getting quite good now at getting vintage strat trems to stay reasonably in tune even with quite vigorous wangery...

And I'm now thinking my Explorer wants a short Maestro - watch footage of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1975 or so, Allen Collins's Explorer seems to hold its tuning OK under what I'd term "vigorous wangery".

On the Gibson forums, some nice chap was telling me that the Maestro is very good at "faster vibrato" than you can achieve with your left hand - that seems to be what Allen Collins used it for (and it's one of the things I use a strat trem for now).

And, oh yeah, amongst all the excitement, I forgot to answer this last night:

Here's the long vibrola from my SG. The only difference with the long vibrola was the added tailpiece which was used to fix the Lyre cover to hide the fixing screws and make it look more finished. The actual operating bit was very crude - just a piece of flat semi-coiled metal which the walrus tooth arm operated by 'rolling' it on the guitar body.
