BK help!
« on: July 26, 2010, 12:51:17 PM »
Hey everyone this my first post here, this forum is great!

If you have any input toward my issue please post or contact me.

I have an Anderson Classic  and I am on my third BK bridge pickup for my guitar. First I had a Rebel Yell and it was to smooth and the highs were rolled off to much, second I had a VHII and it was nice but not enough volume or gain to come close to my R9's Burstbucker 2, I know the guitars will never sound the same but for switching up guitars I would like them to near match in output sound in the bridge positions.
Now I just received a new Holy Diver and my Anderson still sounds weak in comparison??? Is there possibly something else wrong that I am missing? Bad volume pot? bad soldering job? This pickup from what I understand is suppose to kicka$$! Help!!

I'm surprised you had a problem with the highs on a Rebel Yell.  I would check the pot values, are they 250K?  Also what is the value of the tone capacitor?  Humbuckers like 500K pots, and the Rebel Yell & Holydiver would work with 1meg if you want more top end.  As to overall volume level, I would check the connections as both the RY & HD should piss all over the burstbucker for output.  Is it the top end that's missing?  If so it sounds like the tone control could be also an issue.  Try taking it out of the circuit (in fact a good test is just to wire the pickup to the output jack and see how it sounds then).

The problem I have experienced is the VHII and HD pickups sound single coil like no meat, I believe the volume is 500K, I have a new one I will install just to be sure, Anderson adds resistors and a cap really unnecessary probably. I am going to wire it for just volume and 5way as I don't use the other tone and pull pot features.

I don't know you guitar nor what pups and electronic it comes with, but what you describe is nowhere close to what I know of BKP humbuckers. I really suspect a problem in your wiring. I swapped my Vox Custom 24's stock X2Ns (possibly the heaviest passive 'buckers you can get) for Crawlers, and I can tell you they don't sound anything like "single coils" or "no meat".

This is called a "treble bleed", and is supposed to cure the loss of high ends you get when rolling down the volume. Looks like they at least git it right if there's a resistor involved (most constructors just add the cap, and it really don't work), but that's really something I'd get rid of  - but YMMV.

But anyway - I don't think this can explain why you'd find RY weak (and let's not talk about HD).

Mmm... Pull pots with four-braids pups ? Look no further, you probably got the wiring wrong and have your buckers wired parallel or split. Remember that each brand has it's own wiring color code.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

And have you played with pickup height?
