SATCHEL STEEL Panther tone - ?? VHIIs?
« on: August 02, 2010, 09:24:04 PM »
Hey guys, I've been debating over which alnico pups to get for a mahogany flying V, playing through engl fireball. screamer and a marshall JVM...

would love to get this gorgeous fluid lead tone that satchel gets..I think he's using stock kramer pickups..and he p[lays through a tsl 100 (quite bright) and sometimes a JVM I think.

...I think it sounds great!

which A5 pickups u reckon would do the job- VHIIs, RYs, NBs?

I think in your big mahogany V a Rebel Yell or the ceramic Cold Sweat would nail that tone.

That is IMHO a VHII tone in a maple and mahogany guitar, however as I'm not a fan of all mahogany guitars with humbuckers I would not know what to recommend, maybe RY! I would be asking Tim on this one.

just to let you all know Tim recommended holy divers for satchel's tone ...can't wait to get some. Is it me or are we seriously lacking in holy diver clips though? especially the neck pickup. if anyone has got any, a demo of some sleazy 80s rock would be awesome!

if the holy diver turns out to be too dark i would suggest a rebel yell

so the zebra HD calibrated set has been installed in my flying V....and WOW. My first all alnico V BKP set, these things have got the TONE!!!

...so balanced, so sweet! took ages deciding between these and VHIIs, Tim's guidance was spot on as usual!
THe HDs have given me exactly what I was looking for allround pickups that can do anything, clean --> rock --> metal. I needed a warmer, juicier guitar sound to cover classic rock and hard rock and that is what I got (CS + c-bomb are going to a different guitar- alder random star! metal axe), and a great alternative axe to my other V with painkillers (mahogany metal machine)

Neck pickup- juicy, full, singing- love it, so natural and open sounding and stays clear with high gain
coil-split neck- amazing for strat style funky clean stuff!

Middle position- I usually never use this position but like it a lot, it sounds exactly like the cold sweat neck but with a tad less bass). Equally as good as the neck only for sweep picking etc

Bridge - As someone mentioned in a previous post- the way a JB was supposed to be! tighter bass, smooth highs, warmth in the mids, good pinch harmonics.....no bad quacky or ice picky frequencies to be heard like the modern JB
Coil-split bridge (or not) = van halen tone to a tee!
Both pickups responds so well to picking dynamics, I'm loving the 'air'!

Highly recommended! and many thanks to Tim for making such a versatile beaut of a pickup!  :P

I've been talking about it for 3 years and a half and people are still skeptical

it's the $%&#in ROCK pickup
no darkness, flubbiness, muddiness or whatever

damn... I need to hear that again  :(

Yes mate I've seen several hundred posts from you (!) advocating the holy diver but even i was sceptical because I think a lot of people think it only provides distinctly an 80s tone and there was very limited information on the neck pickup. I went for a calibrated set on Tim's recommendation and I couldn't be happier. I've realised this pickup can cover all grounds and it's the best alnico set I've ever heard, I can't believe how tight the bass is if you want it to be for heavier tones....and the mids....wow...fat!

You're talking about Divers right? They have to be my favorite BK pup. Just amazing. They breath and sing! Ahh its soo good. To the point that I'm considering replacing my Cpig in the other gtar with another Cdiver.

I popped one of these in a BC Rich Gunslinger Retro - very old school VH!! I had a customer put VHIIs in an identical guitar - while it was a good match, the HD was what he was really looking for.

The Unchained clip sounds great!
