thinking of putting some premium CTS 500k pots on my les paul standard 2002

what do you say ,is it the long shaft or the standard one?

I think for that Les Paul you'll need long shaft pots.  Here's a useful guide:

Long pots.

Only old guitars and the Reissues use short pots....

I used to own a 1998 "The Paul SL" with a metal mounting plate, and that definitely had long shaft pots.  That was a thin-bodied guitar, so I'd be very surprised if your Standard doesn't have long shafts.

If in doubt, you can always dismantle it......

metal mounting plate means its long shaft, 100% certain - mine is the same.

Get your pots from the BKP shop, I had some in recently to fit to a mate's guitar and they're very nice indeed - concave middle section on the back like old Gibson pots (note: the majority of new CTS pots just have a flat back).  This is just a cosmetic thing, but I like it from a guitar geek point of view.
