The wah GAS *sigh*
« on: December 13, 2005, 04:34:00 AM »
Mhmm well yeah, for xmas I think I'll buy myself a wah. I don't know why. I guess everyone needs one really? So yeah... I'd like to be able to handle a lot of gain, to be easily modeable (hehehehe...) and to be able to just stay in one position for leads (to get this nasal like tone I love).

So far the contenders are the standard Cry baby (not the fancy model, but I don't know how it's called...), the ZW crybaby (considering it's this aspect of his tone I'm trying to emulate, I guess it really is the obvious choice) and the Ibanez Weeping Deamon (which gets great reviews and has more functions than the ZW).
If the Standard CryBaby can do that, then heck, I may as well go for it and end up modding it later. It's way cheaper than the others (about 60 pounds, against 80 or so for the 2 others) and even modded it could still be cheaper.

Also if you have any other options... Sorry I can't say much about what I want, I don't know much about wahs.
I'm just a drummer who misses having something under his feet :(

Thanks for any advise :)

I have a Dunlop Crybaby wah I could to sell you, though I dunno what the shipping would be from Canada. I was going to list it on eBay tomorrow. If you're interested you can PM me for more details and stuff.  :)

I'm not big on crybaby's myself - they tend to sound a bit thin, and suck tone too (no true bypass). The ZW cry baby is getting amazing reviews in the magazines, and terrible reviews on the internet - so i guess its worth a try if its the sound you're going for. I'd go try a few in a nearby music shop before you commit to one. The VOX wah's are good, and not extortionately priced, too! might be worth thinking about...

Buy a Teese wah (Real McCoy Custom). Geoffrey Teese spent years researching the original Wah pedals and what makes some sound better than others, plus he was really helpful and offered good advice when I was deciding what to buy. I ended up buying his RMC3 pedal.

Apparently Fulltone's wahs are pretty good as well:

I would avoid the basic Morley wah pedals - I gave mine to a friend as it was really disappointing.

The standard CryBabys is a great Wah-Wah pedal, same goes with Vox, both very versitile.  Morely's are cool too but to my ears the sound was missing some Mojo in my Bad Horsie, switching and quality is ace though!

I say get a used CryBaby/Vox from the Bay of E and then go to www.wah-wah.co.uk to get it fully customised!  True Bypass, customised circuitboard and adjustable controls!

I still need to do that too!

Andy!
GREAT GOOGILY MOOGILY!

I have an ancient Thomas Organ Crybaby that used to sound great, but has been played to death and would need some tender lovin' restoration to sound good again.  Until then, I've effectively replaced it with a stock Dunlop Hendrix wah (what Zakk used before the signature model, and I think Tim plays one with Ozzmosis) which is, frankly, a perfectly good wah that doesn't cost the earth!

I've heard excellent things about the RMC3 from people who've played them, but frankly USD 285 is a hell of a lot to spend on a wah pedal.  I could be tempted some day to get the Wizard Wah, though (which seems to be soft of the simpler, "budget" Teese wah).

But, yes, everyone needs a wah! :)

Mhmm basically I'd hope to keep it under 90 pounds. That's the price of the Zakk pedal I think, but the 535Q falls upscale of that.

Check with ebay.com sellers in the US; there are some 535Qs available there for less than 80 pounds. You would have to ask the seller about what international shipping would cost (many offer it), but at worst you might not go much over than 90 pounds limit (depending on how diligent your customs officers are!).

I'm also looking at getting a wah (after I get a tuner!) and I've been looking at George Dennis. Although they seem to have a weird switch (you twist the pedal :? ) they seem good, worth a look maybe? Perhaps someone on the board has used one?

mine cost about 10 bucks more, because he did a tweak to make it sound more like Kirk Hammett's sound.

the difference between Teese and Dunlop wahs is that Geoffrey Teese handmakes his. i dont think it is a bad price for something handmade, and its only really a little more expensive than one of the dunlop or vox wahs.

Almost 300 bucks is a lot more than what I paid for the stock Hendrix!  OK, yours probably sounds better .... ;)

I have a mind to save up for a way cool wah sometime -- there's no effect I use so much as wah -- and maybe a sexy overdrive to go with it (I dig what I've heard from Analog Man's OD pedal mods) but I've got other issues (BKPs, amps/sims) to deal with first.  My budgeting is very slow ... but steady :)

There is quite a wait for Analogman's King Of Tone pedal, but the modified Tubescreamers have no waiting list as far as I am aware.

There's a wait for me to have that much cash to throw around, though.

New pickups first! 8) Then there'll be time to worry about amps/amp-sim solutions and sexy pedals ... though I could really go for an Analog Man screamer mod and a Teese Wizard Wah ....  No, no, gotta keep squireling my spare pennies away!

yeah definitely pickups first. i'm itching for my guitar to be built - i haven't even seen the pickups i ordered as they went straight to Gordon Smith.

i want either an original whammy (not the reissue) or a fuzz factory next, but probably will end up getting a high gain amp before those.
