Thanks for all the info! so i guess things to try that may be worth it are a good NOS tube in V1 and maybe a 12at7 in the PI. though my amp's main purpose is crushing down tuned metal so it might not be very useful for that particular use. good knowledge in this thread!

oh yes, and i know that paying extra for matched triode sections is just rubbish.

Get the old stock valves from a reputable place... very important. It's really easy to get ripped off and sold total cr@p - don't buy off eBay, unless you get a strong and trustworthy recommendation.

I like to get mine either from CE-distribution as i get wholesale price, or the tubestore if i can't squeeze in the minimum order at CE dist.
