3 Humbucker Strat
« on: August 18, 2010, 06:37:41 PM »
Hey all, this is my first post.
I'm building a strat, I've got a body and neck on order at Warmoth, and i want to fit it with 3 humbuckers and a 5 way super switch. I'd like the guitar to be as versatile as possible, to be able to go as heavy as the Melvins or as clean as REM. There are so many BKP humbuckers i don't know what 3 in what combination would give me what i'm looking for and i figure you guys would be the ones to ask.
Any help would be really appreciated....

what are the woods of your body and neck?

The body is chambered Swamp Ash with a Quilted Maple top, and the neck is Maple and Brazilian Rosewood.

Hi,

is there a particular reason why you want a 3 humbucker strat instead of a hum-single-hum? I generally like single coil cleans more, and you'd get very nice sounds with the single coil mixed there.

Anyway, I'm not sure about the suggestion..my instinct would tell me to a thick-but-vintage-toned pickup -> Crawler.
If you get a single coil there too, add a Mother's milk.

Nothing useful to say, but that's the best avatar I've seen on here for AGES!

Well done!

Mark.

Hi, thanks for the response.
The 3 humbucker thing is more for aesthetic reasons than anything else, i always loved the 3 HB Gibson SG's so it's basically that in a Strat body,(greed plays a big part too, there are so many humbuckers to choose from here i just want to try as many as possible).
What pair of humbuckers would you recommend to go with a Mother's Milk.

its a difficult one, with the chambered swamp ash. maybe i would go for VH2s. I was thinking HSH arrangement too

Swamp ash and maple top (even with the chambered body) should be on the brighter side, and at least the Melvins song I listened from youtube, had a pretty thick tone. Has a lot to do with the amp and settings, I know. But anyway, that's why I suggested the Crawler: thick, but vintage. Not muddy. Would add the meat to a maple-topped strat..

I'm thinking Zaned has the right idea with the Crawler set so it's not overly bright.  And if you're sticking with the 3-humbucker idea, maybe something "traditional" like a Mule in the middle?

Have you decided how you're going to wire it?  I think you'll need some coil-split options for versatility.... or you could have the middle humbucker out of phase with the other two, for some nice thin hollow sounds in positions 2 and 4.  That could be pretty cool, actually.  :D
