Question about the BKP's "true" PAF
« on: December 14, 2005, 03:04:20 AM »
I've been wondering, in my quest for true PAF sound for my verysoontocome LesPaul, if this reasoning could make any sense. In terms of output (and voicing ?) would it be fair to think that:

Stormy Monday > Burstbucker 1
Mule                 > Burstbucker 2
Riff-Raff            > Burstbucker 3

Or is this total b****hit ?

And if so what about the Classic '57 ? Just a Mule with perfectly equal coil winding ?
Also, being a Thin lizzy fan, i seriously watch the Emerald and the Cold Sweat  but fear a bit abour their versatility over the "PAF" family described up.

Well thank you for your time guys.

Bareknuckles are a LOT closer to PAF's than the current Gibson pickups...

BS I'm afraid, none of them are copies of BBs............ours are all handwound with 42 AWG plain enamel, offset coils and unpolished Alnico IV magnets(V in the Riff Raff).........also they're all voiced by ear.
The Stormy Monday and Mule represent my versions of the original PAF(57 through to 60).......as is well known these varied greatly but I've gone for what I consider to be the sweet spots........Stormy Monday is the lower wound, more open version, The Mule the hotter, punchier version. The Riff Raff represents the cross over to a more symmetrical wind and Alnico V magnets.

Forgot to add, the Emerald and Coldsweat are in no way meant to be PAFs...........the Emerald is based on a the hotter LP Custom pickups Robertson used and the Cold Sweat the hot bridge Sykes used.

Well thank you very much ! That's the kind of information i wanted !
Now i know it would surely be a AIV Mule bridge and Stormy Neck.

Also am i wrong to think that the Emeralds must be incredibly cool in Custom LP over a Standard ? To be more clear : i know that you (Tim) are a big LP fan... can you tell us if there is a set (like the Cold Sweats for ex...) that you voiced more for LPs Custom or Standards ? Or found that a set worked better in particular for the one or the other ?
Yeah i'm also referring to the Ebony/Rosewood dilemma

I have a set of Emerald's in a Tokai Love Rock (based on a 59/60 LP Standard), and they sound great.
Bibble.
BKP's: Black Dog set, Emerald set, & Crawler set.
