Need help chosing single coil pickups for my strat
« on: September 11, 2010, 01:10:14 AM »
Hey, I'm new here...

I've been very unhappy with my pickups for a while now. ESPECIALLY, my bridge pickup.

The bridge sounds thin and unsuable IMO.

I own a mexican lefty strat with a maple MIJ neck. I believe the body is alder.

I'm after something a bit fatter and warmer sounding thats nice for classic rock/ rock solos mainly that can handle from clean, to mid distortion for the bridge position.

For the neck, I'd like something 'similar' (not exactly) to John mayers tone. I want that smooth bluesy pickup that can handle clean very well and such things as Hendrix.

I do like the mothers milk pups, but unsure.

I play things like RHCP, Hendrix, Muse, Guns n Roses etc and such genres as rock, classic rock, blues.

I would love to hear suggestions for all this.

Thanks, Luke :)

Welcome to the forum. I would say Mothers Milks would be suitable. If you wanted a bit more than that then possibly a set of Slowhands.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
BKP's: Apache, Country Boy, Slowhands.

Thank you!

Great stuff I'll check out the slowhands.

Its really difficult deciding pickups.

I'm also a lefty, does this affect the pups in any way?

Thanks, Luke :)

Yep, I'd go with 38th's suggestions as well, but personally I'd lean towards Irish Tours instead of Slowhands... I've found that ITs cover all those bases. I understand that Slowhands can as well, but will have more mids and give you a slightly less "woody" strat tone.

HOWEVER, all the guitars I've tried ITs in have rosewood fingerboards - I understand that some people have found them a bit bright with all-maple necks. This might depend on your amp settings I guess... but, also, I've recently discovered that MIJ/CIJ Fenders (teles/strats, both rosewood or maple board) all seem to have less top-end than other Fenders, and it seems to be in the neck, so the brightness of ITs with maple might not be a problem here?

My gut-feeling is Mother's Milks is what you want, but I've never actually tried them myself. I've thought about them and listened to clips a lot though... My first set was a toss up between Mother's Milks and ITs, I went ITs because I wanted a "bit hotter" and have never looked back that much. My next set were Sultans. I'm now considering another set for a third strat... MMs are probably gonna miss out again because I think my ITs get fairly close to the job that MMs would do for me.

On the left-hand front, I guess it will depend on whether you want staggered pole-pieces or not... If you don't, I would have thought left-right makes no difference. But if you do want staggered poles, I think BKP could probably do them left-handed if you ask (for no extra charge I'd guess?) - get in touch with them :D

And welcome to the forum :D

I'm very satisfied with my IT's in a swampash strat with maple neck/ ebony fingerboard. Wenn you roll the volumeknob of the guitar down just a bit, you get that early sixties sound. Very balanced. I think close to what MM's sound like. IT's can go from pristine clean, funky stuff, to Chili Peppers and Hendrix/Stevie Ray. Great pickups that can roar too if neccessary. Bright they are, but you can tame the topend with the amp-eq and the tonepot on the guitar. I do that on my Telecaster all the time and it works very well.
