Hot Rodded Marshals (or marshall clones)
« on: October 24, 2010, 05:13:01 AM »
I need suggestions.
It is time to buy a new amplifier, and I have finally decided on the tone that I want. I want a JCM 800 tone modded for higher gain.

My first train of thought is to buy a used Marshall 2204 (has to be 50 watts) and send it over to FJA mods to have it tricked out.

I was looking around online and I saw a couple of other JCM 800 Clones (splawn street rod, Mini JCM 800, Ceriatone, Granger etc.)

I will include a couple of clips from FJA that nail the sort of tone I am looking for.

If any of you guys know of a brand I should look at or a place where I can find used JCM 2204s at good prices.  Let me know
(ebay is too obvious)

If you can do without a loop, I suggest the Marshall 2203KK. A great amp and can be had for reasonable money, has a noise gate, too.

Splawn or Bogner is the way to go for that sort of sound IMHO.

Whatever you buy, you'll need to CRANK it!  8)

Heard great plexi-tones on the new Bogner Goldfinger (which has 6v6's sic!).
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I would do something like the kk jcm 800 but my setup and neighbors couldn't handle 100 watts. I need something around 50.

I will check out the Goldfinger.

50watts is loud as hell!
100watts is loud as hell!

10watts is half as loud as 100watts.

there are lot of amp to list here. Splawn is the way to go if you want to stick with EL34's (without badgering amp companies for EL34 conversion). They do 50 watt options. Other hot rodded marshall circuits I can think of right now use 6L6.

you could talk to Nic at Ceriatone about getting a modded clone maybe.
Or go custom build. You'd have a few options if you wanted a modded marshall circuit.
there are probably loads more options.

My 10w HTH Hot rodded marshall is plenty loud as many on the forum will confirm

It's based on the Marshall Mod that was on the amp Slash used (the famous S.I.R.#39 Marshall that was used on appetite , and also by George Lynch)

It has a plexi channel and a hot rod channel, as well as a couple of other custom tweaks:
It has a 6 position mid range select - as used by Lee Jackson on his amp designs and there is a variable "slope resistor" on the front that enables you to go from a more British (Marshall) to a more American (Fender/Boogie) response from the amp.

It's single ended and can run from a wide variety of big bottle tubes - EL34/6L6/KT88/6550

For use at home or studio it works well , although it's pretty loud - especially when you think that there is only 1 power tube

you could definitely gig with this amp if you have it on a chair to lift it up closer to ear-level.

The Goldfinger is 40 watts, but will still be quite loud. I play an Orange Rockerverb 50 head/2x12 cab, but even in the band I can't turn up the mastervolume above 12.00 o'clock cause it blows everybody away. Sounds good and big though at at that volume.

used bogner shiva
the VHT deliverance is a great and much cheaper option as well
don't think they can handle EL34's without some small modding, though

or you could look for an already modded JCM or JMP
you can find a lot of modded marshalls for cheap on craigslist
modded amps priceranges only follow the forum trends, so you'll find a lot of NOW unknown modders

I bought a rebuilt '73 JMP 50w for $1000 with 2 extra tubes, tube buffered loop and extra gain stages
PTP board is stock, but it was fully rebuilt
I have no idea who did it
the amp was around Los Angeles, California (I'm in Brazil), and most people told me it looked like a Morin or Lee Jackson amp, but they denied the paternity
it's very bass heavy, but it's a killer amp
more of a Soundgarden/Sleep/Corrosion of Conformity tone than the Jose Arredondo voiced 80's hard rock sound most "famous" guys do today (Cameron, Fortin, Friedman, FJA)
I'm having it slightly tweaked to cut some of the excessive low end
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I have been looking at the Granger amps. Those look pretty cool. Some of those FJA modded amps look pretty awesome. I like the look of the street rods by Splawn. The ability to go from lower gain plexi to higher gain JCM tones is appealing.

Does anyone own a Street rod? or has anyone played one.

yes
he offers a new model called Chupacabra
it's a Jose based amp, just like most of the hot rodded JCMs

shipping is expensive, but still worth it, imo
unless you find a marshall for cheap
