Good affordable 2x12 cabs
« on: November 05, 2010, 06:42:59 PM »
hey guys i've never really looked into cabs before as i've always used combos.

But i really want to build on my sound and get a decent closed back 2x12 cab as the open back 1x12 combo isn't really cutting it for tightness and attack.

So where should i be looking for a semi decent cab at a reasonable price?

I have no idea how much cabs should or shouldn't cost as i already stated i've never really looked before.

Thanks

Really impressed with the cab I got from Martin. Top notch.

You should definitely check out Zilla cabs: http://www.zillacabs.com/index.php
Custom made in the UK, I swapped my Diezel 4x12 for one of his 2x12 Fatboys and have absolutely no regrets.

I've been using a Tube-Town 2x12 for about 3 years - http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/index.php/cat/c380_TTC-Guitar-Cabinets.html

Mine's a British Series and it's great - got 2 G12H30s in it. Got it as it was quite compact and light. The flex-back is really useful - at home I keep the back on but when playing with a band/gigging I take the back off which spreads the sound a lot more. They come unloaded which sounds like something you're after. I think mine took about 2 weeks to get here, great service from them as well.

On a related note, anyone know of a company that makes good angled 4x10 cabs?

2x12?! PDT_008

i take that as you think i should go for a 4x12 ??

I was thinking 2x12 originally for space issues.

Upon further thinking a 4x12 would take up the same amount of floor space  and thats my main issue as i have plenty of room in regards to height.

what are the tonal differences other than a 4x12 sounding twice as big?

As transport costs can be high, for cabs its vital where you live. Different cabs are great in different locations.

In general I like ported designs for 2x12, but different manufacturers have different approaches. If I were in the US Id try to get a used Port City, but its surely at the upper end of the price scale.

I don't really think a 4x12 is that necessary other than for looks. Might give you a bit more low end but it's not like you  really need that.. I do still want one though cos there's nothing cooler than a halfstack :P

from pov, I like angled 4x12s as they're big enough to fire the sound at/around ear level.  if you have a 2x12 on the floor it's just blasting past your legs (unless you have the cab on a few beer crates).
