Which value pots for p90s in an SG?
« on: November 20, 2010, 06:04:20 PM »
Well curiosity is getting the better of me so I fancy trying out my BKP P90s in my SG :P Currently using 500k in the Les Paul but wondering whether they'd sound overly bright/harsh in an SG with that value?

you can always solder a fixed resistor across the pot if its a bit bright.

for example, 500k pot with a 500k fixed resistor is 250k.  if you wanted somewhere in between, try a 1M fixed for a total of 330k or a 2M2 fixed resistor for a pot value around 400k.

Thanks, didn't know that :) I didn't want to do a complete re-wire with 500k pots then have to re-do it if they're too bright, but that would solve the problem.

One thing to do that will definitely improve things is swap the nasty little ceramic disc caps  to oil and paper ones - either vitamin Q or the NOS Russian ones that BKP sell (we keep both in stock too as well as BKPs if anyone wants to buy from us)

With decent tone caps you don't get the overly harsh problems - it just seems to sound right - I also favour rewiring to 50s spec

Thanks Jonathan, I'll do that then.. What is the 50s spec exactly - got a link to an easy to follow wiring diagram?

Also will regular length shaft (ooer) CTS pots fit a modern Gibson without any re-drilling etc?

Cheers Jonathan, I may give you a call next week (don't get paid til saturday). I also need to sort out one of my pickups getting re-covered - just need to decide whether I want both to be the nice aged nickel I have on the pig 90, or standard chrome like the MQ has.

I guess that's wiring for a Les Paul? Not really sure where the wires to switch or jack are meant to go though.

edit - quick photoshop of the aged nickel covers, looks quite good I think - makes it a bit unique and more rawk :D
