Blimey!  Is that two cars, with yours in front?  It looks like an ice monster trying to devour the car behind.

In the 1970s and 80s/90s 3-4 inches of snow didn't cause the railways, roads and buses to completely fail and fall apart

What has changed?
I think the way we live is just fundamentally different now. We're much more reliant on our cars than we were 25-30 years ago, and everything about our living patterns now typically relies on being able to drive. Also remember 30 years ago there was less than one car per household, so simple pressure on the networks means that any complicating factor causes problems. Same with the trains to an extent, although as has been pointed out underinvestment in rolling stock and infrastructure are also major issues. The spiralling London house prices over 2-3 decades mean that the commuter belt is now nearly 100 miles in radius.

Although clearly not in a circle... :D

True, my west counry-centric view of the world :D Although, if house prices had continued increasing, living in Calais might have become a realistic option  :?

I love it, loads of my sites have stopped.  Lots of people who would normally give me grief can't get to work, so I can sit here at home and actually get some work done for a change.  Give it another week and I'll have caught up  :D
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I'm absolutely loving it.The more the better

Got an early finish today because all public transport stopped even though i live a 2 min walk from work.

Everyone who left before the office closed has to pay it back as flexi which i find hilarious as they all said i'd regret staying but really i'm getting paid to have  half a day off and they are going to have to do hours and hours of flexi as people started leaving at 8am

i have been in school the last 2 days - even though it takes 3 trains,a bus and 30 mins walking to get where i am going for my first placement.   They stayed open because the main roads are not too bad, round here.  Pavements and side roads (the ones i have to walk on) have been cr@p though

some schools shut as soon as somebody mentions snow - i never seem to end up in one of them! :(

Come to Wakefield. Every school seems to be shut.

And that was before it even started settling

I didn't make it in today- the main road that I need to take was blocked for 4 hours after an accident. The alternative route is a country road that had a large van blocking it. So after leaving home at 7 and getting home at 9.30 having managed to get 3 miles up the road, I decided it wasn't worth it. I Worked from home today and was checked up on by my employers and they seemed happy that I was one of the few snowed off people who were actually doing something. Last night one of my colleagues took nearly 7 hours to do a journey that normally takes 90 minutes. This country is hopeless though I guess our excuse is that this is not something we experience a lot(maybe that will change) and therefore we don't have the measures in place to deal with it.

We still don't have much here, a lot of it is just ice now. Went out for a spin on the road bike, that was fun with slick tyres!

Mrs 38th just said that there might be 6 inches tonight. "Indeed there might" I replied.

Wahey!

You're somewhere in the deep South aren't you Steve?  I don't think there's anything much forecast in London itself.  Though to be honest, another light dusting would be welcome - the leftover snow from yesterday has turned icy and treacherous.
