Rewinds?
« on: November 28, 2010, 10:10:46 AM »
Now that my Aftermaths are up and running, I have a pair of 7-string Duncans sitting around. I'll be honest, I think they sound like an elephant-nose-fart compared to the Aftermaths. So, I was thinking "what could I do with these flabmachines?" I might get another low-priced 7 soon (think 7321), so why not get them rewound? I'm curious though, what exactly can the BKP team do? There's pricing for new magnets, covers, pretty much everything. Can I just say "Hey, make this Alnico JB into a Ceramic Nailbomb?", pay the money and receive an awesome pickup? Or are there limitations to a rewind?

I think you can do pretty much whatever you like, but the limitation is the cost - rewinding a humbucker is £32 per coil, a new magnet is £10 I think, so that's £74.

A cover, if you want one, is another £20 (although I'm not sure if the polepiece spacing of a BKP cover would exactly match a Duncan).   That's £94.

So basically you're getting pretty close to the price of a new pickup.   It's probably cheaper overall to sell the Duncans - you should get at least £30 each if they're in good condition - and buy some nice brand new BKPs.  :)
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Philly has nailed it, but furthermore there's a lot more to a pickup than simply the wire gauge, number of turns and magnet. BKPs are made with the best quality parts they can source in every instance (plus they often take things further themselves, such as heat-treating polepieces to ensure maximum conductivity, etc..). These things all add up to the quality of the pickups, both tonally and structurally.
To "turn your pickup into a Bare Knuckle" would mean replacing pretty much every component, and isn't really what the rewinding service is all about - it's intended for restoring broken or damaged pickups, or for upgrading specialist pickups BKP don't offer (Jazzmaster pickups etc).
It'd definitely be most economical to sell your Duncans and order a set of the uncompromised real deal :)

Makes perfect sense. Thanks guys. Chances are I won't be able to flip the SDs for anything though. Nobody plays a 7 in this town.

So, does the Aftermath have less treble than the JB? Remember me?
