buying a guitar from a builder by bank transfer

So I'm buying a guitar from a builder most of you guys will know, it's a new experience for me and the best way to pay the cash is by bank transfer. I know he'll delivery the goods but I am uneasy to send such a large amount of cash and wait for the guitar to show up.

Personally I would love to have a contract to back everything up, all I have is a few emails between us, will that cover everything legally? As I said I know he will deliver, I would just like some reassurance.

If it's who you spoke to me about, he took a cheque happily enough, albeit three years ago, might do stuff differently now.

And I dunno if a cheque is really any more secure than a bank transfer anyway :?

I don't know much about this stuff, but I gather credit cards protect your payments better than bank transfers and so on...

maybe your bank might be helpful?

Well being the most money I've spent on something in my life, I would just like something legally binding.

Neil's experience doesn't help but I think mine is almost ready as I think it's an order someone else cancelled and just needs pickups

If you're that concerned, offer to pick up the guitar in person with cash in your hand...

We've already spoken about this. Just go with it for this, mate! In terms of legality, it's a payment for an item being sold, and you are protected under UK law as a purchaser without an agreement or formal contract in place anyway. But as you say, you've no doubt of that. I know it's a lot of money, but that's the way it is!

You just need a receipt for the payment (which he can probably give you with no problems) and then you should be fine. Just ask for that "for your records".

Ask him to send you an invoice for the guitar - email will be fine - then reference the invoice in the payment details.

It's how you would do it on paypal : - send an invoice/request for money > get paid > send goods

If you're really worried a reputable businessman might rip you off, pay by credit card. If the goods don't arrive, all credit card companies allow you to "charge back" i.e. have the funds refunded to your card and it's up to them to chase the debt from the supplier.

Understandably credit card companies HATE having to do this but they're bound by law to do it. Obviously if you abuse the system by charging back for anything that's a day late then you'll probably end up on a credit blacklist but it's worth knowing that the money's safe.
