corian is actually pretty good, at least tonally.  The slots still need to be accurate and nicely smooth for it to work effectively

I've been using that second method(as posted by WezV) for years now. It sort of works like a locking tuner plus you can waggle the string excess until it breaks off so it looks really neat.
